Former India opener Virender Sehwag scored a scintillating 88-ball hundred to steer MCC past Durham in the English county season curtain raiser in Abu Dhabi on Wednesday.

The MCC skipper led from the front, hitting 18 fours and a six in his knock of 109 as the team won by six wickets.

It was the 35-year-old’s first hundred in first class cricket since the one he scored against England in November 2012.

The four-day day-night match also featured the use of pink balls which were recently trialled in the Australian Sheffield Shield. It, therefore, grants Sehwag the distinction of becoming the first Indian to hit a hundred in a first class match with a pink ball being used.

His entire innings lasted 97 balls and included a fourth-wicket stand of 105 with Nottinghamshire's Samit Patel before he fell to Jamie Harrison, the same bowler off whom he reached the three figure mark.

Chasing 225 for victory, MCC were 14 short of the target when Sehwag departed.
