The Board of Control for Cricket in India is looking to replace the not-so-popular annual Champions League Twenty20 with another tournament.

According to Indian Premier League chairman Rajeev Shukla, it is exploring options for a new league in September.

After six years of CLT20, where winners of various world T20 competitions clash, the BCCI is planning to scrap the event following dwindling viewer interest in the tournament.

Shukla says a new league can be a good answer.

"Yes, we are planning to do away with the Champions League T20. In place of that we are considering an alternative league, but, at the moment, all this is at the planning stage,” he told PTI.

Since its inception in 2009, the TV ratings of CLT20, which is in joint ownership of India, Australia and South Africa, have dipped considerably. Shukla said he and BCCI secretary Anurag Thakur are trying to come up with something different.

"Several ideas are coming and honourable secretary and myself are considering those ideas. We will sit together after the IPL gets over and try and plan out something."

The UAE is reportedly being considered as a possible venue for the proposed league, but Shukla was unwilling to reveal anything more.

"At the moment we don't have anything in hand, but, yes, we are in the process of bouncing off ideas. When something concrete comes up, we will certainly bring it to everyone's notice," was all he said.

The competition was hosted by India four times (2009, ‘11, ‘13, ‘14), while South Africa staged it in 2010 and ‘12.

Chennai Super Kings (2010, '14) and Mumbai Indians (2011, '13) won the CLT20 title twice each.

Australia’s T20 champs New South Wales (2009) and Sydney Sixes (2012) lifted the trophy in different editions.
