Special General Meeting is way forward for BCCI to find new leader

Anurag Thakur The leadership vacuum created in the Board of Control for Cricket in India following president Jagmohan Dalmiya's demise will be filled only after Board secretary Anurag Thakur calls a Special General Meeting.

Dalmiya: Tactician who made business out of cricket

From PM Modi to Tendulkar, India mourns passing away of Dalmiya

"In BCCI constitution 16/d it is stated that in case of death of president, a notice has to be issued by BCCI secretary for a special AGM. Within 21 days special AGM should take place where the interim president will be chosen," a BCCI official said.

Dalmiya passed away following massive cardiac arrest on Sunday night.

The selection or election of the president will not be the easiest of jobs given that BCCI is in a limbo in the current scenario.

While Indian Premier League chairman Rajeev Shukla's name is doing the rounds, the UPCA president and Congress leader will require support from the eastern state in order to become the president.

East's vice-president, Gautam Roy, could also be a candidate considering he is the senior-most among the five Vice-Presidents, having first been elected at the Board's Gwalior AGM in 1992. But Roy might not have many backers in the BCCI.

Similar is the situation of Delhi's CK Khanna, who is a vice-president from Central Zone.

As per the BCCI constitution, Thakur will have to convene a Special General Body Meeting to elect the president but it is still not clear whether he can do so considering the next date of the working committee will only be decided after the Supreme Court gives its verdict.
