England batsman James Taylor has been forced to retire from all forms of cricket with immediate effect after it was discovered that he has a serious heart condition.

Taylor had to withdraw from Nottinghamshire fixture against Cambridge University last week with what was believed to be a viral condition, but the club said on Tuesday that scans had revealed that the 26-year-old has ARVC (arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy).

"Safe to say this has been the toughest week of my life! My world is upside down. But I'm here to stay and I'm battling on! #lifestooshort," tweeted Taylor.

England team director Andrew Strauss spoke about his "shock" and "sadness" over the unfortunate retirement due to medical condition.

"Throughout his career, he (Taylor) has constantly impressed with his determination to make the absolute most of his ability," said Strauss.

"It is immensely cruel that such a hard working player will be unable to fulfil his great potential in the international arena," he added.

"Very sad news about @jamestaylor20 .. A great lad who will be greatly missed on the pitch but hopefully will stay involved with the game," former England captain Michael Vaughan tweeted.

"Can't believe @jamestaylor20 is having to retire. Life can be really cruel sometimes. Thoughts with him," tweets England pacer Chris Tremlett.

"Such bad news to hear about a top player @jamestaylor20 what a talent. Wish you all the best in your recovery! Topguy," read teammate Moeen Ali’s tweet.
