A clinical display by the bowlers gave Mumbai a crucial first innings lead before captain Aditya Tare's fine show with the bat helped them reach to a commanding position on the third day of their Ranji Trophy quarterfinal match against Hyderabad.
On a topsy-turvy day, defending champions Mumbai bowled out Hyderabad, who began the day on 167/3, for 280 with left-arm spinner Vijay Gohil picking up three of the five wickets to fall. Abhishek Nayar, who made 59 in the first innings, took 4 wickets for 60.
Hyderabad needed 127 runs to wipe out the first innings deficit and they came within 15 runs of the lead. But a lower order collapse resulted Hyderabad slipping from 255 for 5 to 280 all out. Wicketkeeper Kolla Sumanth battled through to make 44 and he was the last man to be dismissed.
Mumbai, who had scored 294 all out in their first innings, were 102 for 3 in their second innings from 35 overs at the at the draw of the stumps.
In their second innings, Mumbai were rattled early as they slipped to 52 for 3, with Mohammad Siraj dismissing Shreyas Iyer (12) and Suryakumar Yadav (3).
But, opener Praful Waghela (27 batting) and Tare (39 batting) steered Mumbai to safety with an unbroken 50-run fourth-wicket stand.
Mumbai have now taken an overall lead of 116 runs with seven second innings wickets in hand.

Jharkhand put one foot in semis with 1st innings lead
Jharkhand secured a crucial first innings lead, courtesy smart batting from the lower-order batsmen, even as Haryana was fighting hard in the Ranji Trophy quarterfinals.
Starting the day at a solid 228 for three, Jharkhand's first innings folded at 345 as they took a 87-run lead over their opponents with Virat Singh (107) scoring his second first class century.
Virat had started at 81 even as his partner Ishank Jaggi (77) could not add a single run to his overnight total. Crucial contributions from Shabaz Nadeem (34) and Rahul Shukla (28) ensured that Jharkhand had enough runs on the board.
At the end of day three, Haryana were 146 for two, effectively 59 runs ahead with leg-break bowler Samar Quadri scalping both the Haryana batsmen.
Haryana medium paceman Harshal Patel got success in the third over of the day when he bowled both Jaggi and Ishan Kishan (0) on successive deliveries.
In his next over, he dismissed Kaushl Singh (0), having him caught behind. Three quick wickets pegged Jharkhand back a bit but Nadeem provided good support to Virat as they added 57 runs for the seventh wicket.
Yuzvendra Chahal broke the partnership by catching Nadeem in his follow through and soon also got rid of Virat but Shukla and Quadri managed to get some crucial runs for Jharkhand with their gritty batting.
Ashish Kumar did not come out to bat for Jharkhand due to injury.
When Haryana came out to bat, openers Nitin Sani (41) and Shubham Rohilla (43) provided a good start but both were removed by Quadri.

Gohel's unbeaten ton takes Gujarat to a commanding position
Opener Samit Gohel hit an unbeaten century to take Gujarat to a commanding position against Odisha in a quarterfinal match.
Gohel remained unbeaten on 110 as Gujarat piled up 246 for three in their second innings at the end of the third day's play at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium.
Gohel's runs came off 291 balls with the help of 14 boundaries. He was ably supported by Priyank Panchal (81) as the duo shared 149 runs for the opening wicket.
At stumps, Manpreet Juneja (6 not out) was occupying the crease alongside Gohel as Gujarat extended the overall lead to 310 runs with seven wickets in hand and two full day's play remaining.
