Mohammed Shami was named as the replacement for the injured Jasprit Bumrah in the Indian team for the T20 World Cup, the BCCI said on Friday.

"The All-India Senior Selection Committee has named Mohammed Shami as Jasprit Bumrah’s replacement in India’s ICC Men’s T20 World Cup squad. Shami has reached Australia and will link up with the squad in Brisbane ahead of the warm-up matches," BCCI secretary Jay Shah said in a press release.

Bumrah was ruled out of the World Cup with a back injury, while team-mate Ravindra Jadeja also misses the tournament because of a knee injury.

Shami landed in Brisbane on Friday to join the Indian team ahead of their two practice matches against Australia (October 17) and New Zealand (October 19). He missed the three-match T20I and ODI series against South Africa because of COVID-19, which also delayed his departure to Australia as he had to undergo a fitness test at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru.

The pace bowler last played in T20 Internationals during the previous edition of the ICC T20 World Cup in the UAE last year.

However, he excelled in this year's IPL for title winners Gujarat Titans, with 20 wickets in 16 matches.

Mohammed Siraj and Shardul Thakur have been named as backups and will travel to Australia shortly.

India open their T20 World Cup campaign with a high-voltage clash against Pakistan at the MCG on October 23.

India's squad for ICC T20 World Cup: Rohit Sharma (Captain), KL Rahul (vice-captain), Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, Deepak Hooda, Rishabh Pant (wicket-keeper), Dinesh Karthik (wicket-keeper), Hardik Pandya, Ravichandran Ashwin, Yuzvendra Chahal, Axar Patel, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Harshal Patel, Arshdeep Singh, Mohammed Shami.
