Farveez Maharoof claimed five wickets, including a hat-trick, as India were dismissed for 209 in 43.2 overs in an inconsequential league match of the Asia Cup in Dambulla, Sri Lanka, on Tuesday.
The medium pacer took the wickets of Ravindra Jadeja, Praveen Kumar and Zaheer Khan off successive deliveries to claim a hat-trick in the 39th over and finish with impressive figures of five for 42 in ten overs.
Sri Lanka went on to crush India by seven wickets.
Maharoof first trapped Ravindra Jadeja leg before wicket for a duck, then bowled Praveen Kumar off an inside edge and forced Zaheer Khan to edge an outgoing delivery into the waiting hands of wicketkeeper Kumar Sangakkara.
In the process, he became the third Sri Lankan after Chaminda Vaas (twice) and Lasith Malinga to achieve the feat.
Left-arm spinner Herath, playing his first ODI in nearly six years, also contributed with important wickets to finish with two for 31 in seven overs.
Rohit Sharma waged a lone battle for India, stroking 69 from 73 balls, inclusive of seven boundaries, before he was run-out.
He added 79 runs in 93 balls for the fifth wicket with captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni before the latter was run-out for 41. Dhoni's exit triggered a lower order collapse.
India lost their last six wickets for the addition of just 20 runs in the space of 28 deliveries.
Captain Kumar Sangakkara led Sri Lanka's charge, scoring 73 from 82 balls.
He was lucky, as when on 33 he charged down the wicket to Ojha in the 18th over, but got a fine edge that India keeper M S Dhoni failed to catch or collect to stump him.
He went on to complete his half-century off 54 balls.
Mahela Jayawardene finished unbeaten on 53 from 67 balls.
He also had a slice of luck, being dropped before opening his account by Dhoni off Dinda in the 15th over. The India captain reacted a bit too late to an edge as the batsman tried to glance the ball down the leg side.
