Scotland presses for international status

Scotland's energetic campaign for the grant of full international limited overs status was bolstered by its 2-0 win over Bangladesh, winners of the last edition of the ICC trophy for associate nations.

Slated as a three match series, the final game on Sunday was however abandoned due to rain. Scotland clinched the series on Saturday, when it won by seven wickets after dismissing Bangladesh for a paltry 97.

Bangladesh is currently ranked 10th in the world, just behind the nine full members of the ICC. The two teams, interestingly, are drawn to meet each other during the league phase of the 1999 World Cup.

John Everett, chairman of the Scottish Cricket Union, said the series win would boost the campaign for ICC to grant full international status to Scotland, putting that nation on par with Bangladesh and Kenya which were accorded the honour earlier this year.

Conceeding that Scottish cricket had miles to go before it could take on any of the top nine, Everett argued that grant of full international status would accelerate development of the game in that country.
