Rain ruins Australia-NZ one-dayer

Persistent rain forced the first one-day cricket international between New Zealand and Australia at Wellington to be abandoned after 23 overs Thursday.

The day-night match was abandoned with Australia well in control at 119 for one, with Matthew Hayden on 64 and Mark Waugh on 45.

The two sides travel to Auckland for the second one-dayer at Eden Park on Saturday.
