Thumping victories for Mumbai, TN

Riz Ahmed

Mumbai crushed hosts Delhi by 310 runs at the Ferozeshah Kotla, Delhi, on Sunday, the last day of the four-day Ranji Trophy Super League Group ‘A’ match, for their second successive victory.

Mumbai, who had earlier defeated defending champions Karnataka, now have 16 points from two matches.

Delhi, chasing 501, were rocked by the experienced Mumbai trio of Abey Kuruvila (3 for 43), Nilesh Kulkarni (3 for 37) and Sairaj Bahutule (3 for 18) and were bowled out for just 190, shortly after tea.

Barring the injured Ashu Dani, who was the highest scorer in both the innings with 74 and 47 respectively, and the dogged Ashish Nehra, none of the Delhi batsmen showed enough patience to stay on a wicket known for runs galore.

Had Delhi batsmen showed the determination of Nehra (3) who waged a lone unbeaten 162-minute battle, the hosts could have escaped with a draw and earned three points. Nehra, along with Robin Singh, batted through the 20-over mandatory quota which ended before the schedule time. Thus the batsmen had to face one more over in which Robin was caught by Paranjpe off Saxena after battling for 33 minutes.

Barring a few tricky permutations and combinations and that too with many surprise results thrown in in the remaining matches, Delhi appears to have lost their last chance to make it to the knock-out round.

Tamil Nadu triumph by an innings and 40 runs

Tamil Nadu needed but just six minutes on Sunday, the final day of their four-day Group C Ranji Trophy Super League match against Haryana, to complete the formalities at Gurgaon.

Haryana, 278 runs in arrears on first innings and resuming at 237 for nine, had just one run added to their aggregate when Reuben Paul stumped V. Jain off left arm spinner Vidyuth Sivaramakrishnan to bring down the curtains on the match.

Tamil Nadu with this win -- their second successive victory having earlier beaten Saurashtra -- now top the group with 16 points.

Railways beat Bihar by 40 runs

Dogged resistance from the Bihar tailenders could just prolong but not deny Railways a convincing 40-run victory at the MECON SAIL stadium, Ranchi, on Sunday, the closing day of the four day Group B Ranji Trophy Super League match.

Bihar, chasing 241 for victory and five down for 136 overnight, had their hopes high till the sixth wicket pair of Manish Kumar and M.S. Dhoni were at the crease. But once Manish returned with the Bihar aggregate 163, it was all but over for Bihar though Dhoni, Kunjan Sharan and last man S. Khan put up a spirited fight.

Parida and Zakir Hussain took two wickets apice to cut short the resistance and Bihar were all out for 201.

Parida finished with four for 52 to have match figures of eight for 81 while Hussain had match figures of seven for 84.

Gandi, Kalyani help Bengal escape with draw

Fighting half centuries by Debang Gandhi and Srikant Kalyani and their 108-run third wicket partnership helped Bengal hold out for a draw against Rajasthan in their Group A Ranji Trophy Super League encounter at the Eden Gardens, Calcutta, on Sunday.

Chasing an improbable 310 in 46 overs for victory, Bengal finished the day at 180 runs for the loss of five wickets.

Rajasthan managed five points from the match while Bengal got three, and their chances of qualifying for the knockout stage now appear slim as they have two tough matches against Karnataka and Mumbai.

Sodhi’s unbeaten ton thwarts Baroda’s victory bid

A fine unbeaten century by Reetinder Singh Sodhi (114) helped Punjab hold out for a draw against Baroda in a Group B Ranji Trophy Super League match at the PCA Stadium, Mohali.

Baroda however maintained their top position in the Group, earning five points by virtue of their first innings.

Baroda, taking a lead of 139, had Punjab on the ropes when hosts’ skipper Vikram Rathour fell without adding to his overnight 46. However Reetinder Singh Sodhi and Pankaj Dharmani (67) ensured against any further setbacks putting together 122 runs in a third wicket association stretched over 56.4 overs.

Sodhi batted for 448 minutes, faced 325 balls and hit 14 fours and a six in his unbeaten knock.
