India rout Bangladesh in first match

India began their campaign in the under-19 cricket World Cup with a 122-run victory over Bangladesh at Moratuwa yesterday.

Put in to bat in damp and overcast conditions after Bangladesh won the toss, India piled up a handsome 235 for 5 off 50 overs. In reply, Bangladesh could manage only 113, being all out in 34.5 overs.

India were given a rousing start by openers Ravneet S Ricky and Manish Sharma who put together a 131-run partnership. And though wickets fell at regular intervals after Sharma was out in the 31st over, they were well on course to a big score. Sharma scored 55 while Ricky 61. Skipper Mohammad Kaif (30) and N K Patel (29) were the other batsmen who chipped in with quickfire knocks.

Rajin Salah Alam was the most successful Bangladesh bowler, bagging three wickets for 44 runs.

Bangladesh nevere recoverd after Hannan Sarker fell to the first ball of the innings, bowled by Shalabh Srivastava who finished with figures of 2 for 32. Anup Dave was the India's most successful bowler. He claimed three wickets for 15 runs. Yuvraj Singh bagged two wickets for six runs.

In other matches, which were affected by rain, runner-up New Zealand defeated Holland in a 32-over a side Group `B' contest and Pakistan beat Kenya in a Group `C' match reduced to 44 overs a team. The South Africa-Nepal Group `C' clash had to be abandoned midway.

Jacques Rudolph scored an unbeaten 156 as South Africa ran up 295 for five in the allotted 50 overs. In reply, Nepal were 24 for four in 12 overs when play had to be abandoned following heavy rain. The organising committee decided to replay the match on a rest day.
