India win under-19 World Cup

India are the under-19 cricket World Cup champions.

In the final at the Sinhalese Sports Club grounds, Colombo, today, they got the better off Sri Lanka by six wickets.

An unbeaten 64-run partnership for the fifth wicket between Reetinder Singh Sodhi (39) and Niraj Patel (34), and a 3 for 33 haul by Uttar Pradesh left arm medium pacer Shalabh Sriwastava were the highlights of India's victory.

India had beaten Sri Lanka by 41 runs in the Super League stage of the tournament.

Sri Lanka won the toss and elected to bat. However, they started disastrously, losing opener G I Daniel to the fourth ball of the match, trapped lbw by Sriwastava for no score. They never really recovered after that early reverse, and it was only a stubborn knock by left hander Jehan Mubarak, who top scored with 58, that saw them put up 178 in 48.1 overs.

In reply, the Indian openers Manish Sharma (27) and Ravneet Ricky (18) went about their task resoutely till Ricky fell in the tenth over with the score on 53. Sharma followed him ten runs later, but skipper Mohammad Kaif (18) and Yuvraj Singh (27) kept the score board ticking. Then followed the handsome partnership between Sodhi and Patel, after Yuvraj was out at 116 for 4, which took the match away from the hosts.

Sodhi was named man of the match, while Yuvraj Singh was voted man of the series
