Mystery caller suggested Cronje's arrest

Our Correspondent

Recent news from South Africa suggests that there were rumours about Hansie Cronje's impending arrest long before the Delhi police made their dramatic announcement on April 7.

On March 28th, at the time when the South African team was in Sharjah following their Indian tour, a mysterious man called a South African radio talk show and said he had heard that Cronje was going to be arrested for having committed a crime. As he had mistakenly spoken to a counselor rather than the newsroom, his name and other details of the call had to be kept confidential.

This information came to light following Judge King's plea to the South African public to pass on whatever information or recommendations they had regarding the match-fixing scandal.

The call was taken by Laraine Lane, a counselor with 15 years of experience. According to Independent Online, she said, "I received a confidential call from a white male who said he'd heard that Cronje had committed a crime and might be arrested."

Similarly, recommendations from the South African public have been pouring in. The common theme is that Hansie Cronje should be punished and help up as an example to present and budding cricketers worldwide of what can befall you if you get involved with cricket's dark side.
