BCCI review of code of conduct beginsThe Rediff TeamAt 11 am this morning, the BCCI began its review of the draft Code of Conduct, in the conference hall of the Cricket Club of India, Mumbai. Of the three members of the draft committee, only two -- Shashank Manohar and D V Subba Rao -- were present. The third member, Ashok Kumbhat, is in hospital. Also present were Kishore Rungta, BCCI treasurer, in the capacity of convenor; board secretary J Y Lele who, we are told, has to be mandatorily present at any such meeting; and Purushottam Rungta and Raj Singh Dungarpur, as special invitees. The omission in the list is all the more glaring when you consider that a P M Rungta, who today holds no post that even remotely gives him a voice on such matters as a code of conduct, is present -- but the president of the BCCI, Dr A C Muthaiah, is not. Speaking to the media, Kishore Rungta said that the next meeting of the draft committee will be held on the 30th of this month in Delhi and then the draft will be passed on to the Federal Minister for Sports S S Dhindsa for his approval. That could be where the rub lies -- the word coming out of Delhi is that Dhindsa is in a mood to crack the whip on the BCCI. He has asked the cricket body for a report on its financial activities, an action plan for the next four years, and a copy of the code of conduct before it is made official. "If I am not satisfied, then I will have to do something," Dhindsa told the media just last week. Related story: Prem Panicker, on why the draft code is unfair
