Sri Lanka cricket board resigns - again!

Sri Lanka's cricket board resigned en masse on Friday for the second time in three months, plunging the crisis-ridden administration of the game into more trouble, officials in Colombo said.

The interim board, appointed by sports minister S B Dissanayake in June last year to manage the controversial Board of Control for Cricket in Sri Lanka, stepped down over differences with the minister, officials said.

The interim treasurer, Asantha de Mel, said they could not continue with their work because their "hands were tied" and they were unable to carry out proposed development plans.

The mass resignation of the five-member interim board came just nine days before the elections to the Board of Control for Cricket in Sri Lanka.

"We wanted to quit several months ago, but the minister wanted us to stay until an audit report was completed," de Mel said. "Now that it is done, we thought we'd better go." Dissanayake was not immediately available for comment.

The interim committee was appointed by the minister following allegations of malpractice during the elections to the cricket board in March last year.

The interim board resigned in February but withdrew their resignation after the minister urged them to stay on until an audit was completed.
