Kanev advanced into the quarter-finals when the top seed Alejandro Falla of Colombia retired with gastroenteritis at 4-5 in the first set. Rajeev Ram of the United States also lost his pre-quarter-final match, bowing to second seed Bruno Echagaray of Mexico 6-1, 6-3.
