Bhupathi-Gambill triumph
in Hamburg Masters
Mahesh Bhupathi and Jan-Michael Gambill won the Hamburg Tennis Masters doubles tournament, beating defending champions Jonas Bjorkman and Tood Woodbridge 6-2, 6-4 in the final on Sunday.
The triumph gave the Indo-US combination 100 points and US $127,500 in prize-money.
In the semi-finals on Saturday, Bhupathi and Gambill had beaten Wayne Ferreira and Yevgeny Kafelnikov 6-1, 7-6(3), while Bjorkman and Woodbridge got the better of Jiri Novak/Radek Stepanek of the Czech Republic 2-6, 6-3, 12-10.
Bhupathi and Gambill had also beaten Leander Paes and Tomas Cibulec in the second round of the tournament.
Last week, Bhupathi partnered Max Mirnyi of Belarus at the Rome Masters. However, the pair was beaten in the quarter-finals by Wayne Black and Kevin Ullyett of Zimbabwe.
Late last month, Bhupathi had partnered Todd Woodbridge. The duo went down Younes El Aynaoui and Albert Portas 3-6, 6-4 (10-3) at the $955,000 Open Seat Godo ATP in Barcelona, Spain, after first round bye.
Before that, Bhupathi had teamed up with Jeff Tarango at the Monte Carlo Masters. The pair was seeded fourth, but they lost in the first round to Arnaud Clement and Nicolas Escude.
