Vasco Sports Club, languishing at the bottom of the league table in the current GFA Professional League, was dealt a big blow when one of its foreign recruits - Nigerian striker Innocent Umegha - was arrested by the police in a fake passport and visa case.
Police verified the passport as well as the visa of the 18-year-old Nigerian player on Saturday only to find that the documents were fake and forged.
The Nigerian had a forged visa, which had expired in 2002, and was staying in the country illegally for the past one year.
Innocent, who was arrested late on Saturday evening under section 468, 471 of the IPC and section 14 of Foreigners Act, was produced before Vasco's first class judicial magistrate on Sunday and remanded to two days in police custody, according to Deputy Superintendent of Police (Vasco) Vishram Borkar.
The young striker had been playing for the Vasco Sports Club for the last two seasons.
