Chambers drugs hearing set for Thursday

European 100 metres champion Dwain Chambers, who tested positive for the anabolic steroid THG last year, is to attend a UK Athletics independent drugs disciplinary hearing on Thursday, British newspapers said on Saturday.

Briton Chambers failed an out-of-competition drugs test for tetrahydrogestrinone in Germany in August and faces a two-year ban. The sprinter has denied knowingly taking a banned substance.

THG is a specially designed performance-enhancing drug modified to try to avoid detection. Its discovery has led to a global doping scandal involving not only track and field but U.S. professional baseball and football.

A spokesperson for UK Athletics said Thursday's hearing would not be influenced by this week's indictment of Chambers's coach Remi Korchemny.

Korchemny, 71, was one of four men who pleaded innocent in the U.S. on Friday to federal charges of distributing illegal steroids and human growth hormones to top athletes.

"The Dwain Chambers case is being looked at on its own facts," the UK Athletics spokesperson told British newspapers on Saturday.

"Given the strict liability rules, the U.S. case is not relevant to what the disciplinary committee has to decide."
