England striker Wayne Rooney will be out of action for up to a month, coach Sven-Goran Eriksson said on Thursday after England's quarter-final defeat on penalties by Portugal.

Eriksson indicated that Rooney, who limped off in the first half, had broken a bone in his foot.

"It's the same injury as Beckham before the World Cup, he will be out maybe for a month," Eriksson said.

Captain David Beckham broke a bone in his foot before the World Cup in 2002 but played in the finals.
