Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho was charged with improper conduct on Friday over comments he made after the first leg of the League Cup semi-final against Manchester United earlier this month.

Mourinho, whose team are 10 points clear at the top of the Premier League, accused United manager Alex Ferguson of trying to influence referee Neale Barry at halftime in the 0-0 Stamford Bridge draw on January 12.

The English Football Association initially indicated it would not take any action against the Portuguese manager but said on its official website on Friday that Mourinho had now been charged with improper conduct.

He has until February 14 to respond to the charge. If he admits the charge or is found guilty Mourinho could be warned, fined or banned from the touchline.

The FA added that having reviewed comments made by Chelsea captain John Terry after the match, it would not be taking any formal disciplinary action against the England defender.

Chelsea won the second leg of the semi-final 2-1 at Old Trafford on Wednesday and will play Liverpool in the final.
