Liquor baron Vijay Mallya envisages major changes in Mohun Bagan's way of functioning and he wants to rename the traditionalist club to begin with.
The club soon could be called Mcdowell Mohun Bagan.
The chief sponsor of the two city-based arch rivals, Mohun Bagan and East Bengal, Mallya's United Breweries (UB) wants greater say in the functioning of the two clubs, and Mallya has said he would be looking forward to working with the Anjan Mitra group that this week won the club elections.
"We look forward to working together and a broader role. For starters, we hope Mohun Bagan's name would be changed," Mallya told Mitra.
The club officials want UB to hike the budget to help build the club from scratch after years of power struggle and in-fighting.
Mallya has said the budget for both teams would be the same, but a decision on the amount hasn't yet been made.
Club insiders say UB's sponsorship for Mohun Bagan could be linked to the change of name.
"This can happen in the next working committee meeting because there is pressure from UB," a club official said.
Alongside, Mohun Bagan and East Bengal officials are even considering jointly petitioning Mallya for a higher budget for the season, sources said
