Dutch striker Dirk Kuyt notched his first goal for Liverpool and Xabi Alonso scored from inside his own half to secure a 2-0 home win over Newcastle United in a solitary Premier League game on Wednesday.
Netherlands forward Kuyt, who moved to Anfield from Feyenoord last month, slotted home after half an hour following a low cross from defender Steve Finnan.
Liverpool were superior throughout the match but had to wait until the 79th minute to make sure of the points when Spanish midfielder Alonso drove home an extraordinary shot from inside his own half.
After five matches, Liverpool moved above Newcastle into ninth place with seven points while their opponents slipped to 10th spot with six points.
