East Bengal are likely play an exhibiton match against top English Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur nine days before their arch rivals Mohun Bagan take on the German club Bayern Munich at Salt Lake stadium on May 27.

East Bengal secretary Kalyan Mazumdar said the club have received a proposal through sponsors UB Group to play the match which is yet to be finalised.

"We have asked the UB for the financial assistance to host the match. We will finally agree once we get the nod for financial assistance from our sponsors. If we get the assistance, the match would be held on May 18," Mazumdar told PTI on Wednesday.

East Bengal is now in Jordan to play an AFC Cup league match at Amman.

Tottenham, who would be touring China in May, have expressed desire to play a match in India against the national side.

But the proposal did not get the favour of national coach Bob Haughton. UB Group, the sponsors of both East Bengal and Mohun Bagan, then came into the picture and sent the proposal to East Bengal to host the match as Mohun bagan is already tied up with Bayern Munich.

Tottenham is currently placed 11th in the English Premier League.
