New Parma boss Hector Cuper said on Wednesday he was confident the club will avoid relegation from the Italian top flight.

The Argentine replaces Domenico Di Carlo, who was sacked on Monday after fourth-bottom Parma's 2-1 home loss to Sampdoria at the weekend.

"I still must have my first training session, give me time to get to know the squad well," he told a news conference.

"In any case I can say that in these 11 matches we will do everything to stay in Serie A and I am sure we can achieve safety."

Cuper, who led Valencia to two Champions League finals in 2000 and 2001, had a largely unsuccessful spell at Inter Milan between 2001 and 2003.

His last job was at Spain's Real Betis, where he was sacked in December.

Parma, the 1995 and 1999 UEFA Cup winners, are level on 25 points with Empoli, who occupy the first of three relegation places.

Di Carlo was appointed in June after Claudio Ranieri quit and joined Juventus having kept Parma up at the end of last season.
