Federation Cup champions Mohun Bagan put on a spirited display before succumbing 1-2 to Al Wehdat of Jordan in their second Group D league match of the AFC Cup at Howrah the Municipal Ground on Tuesday.
Bagan started promisingly but failed to maintain the tempo and faded out in the later part of the first half.
They regrouped in the second half but failed to crack Al Wehdat defence led by captain Hasan Saleh Semrin. Mohun Bagan forged ahead in the 13th minute.
Following a combined move, midfielder James Singh passed the ball to Bhaichung Bhutia who in turn placed it for an overlapping Rakesh Mashi, who beat the Al Wehdat goalkeeper.
The lead was, however, short-lived as the visitors restored parity three minutes later.
Al Wehdat striker Mahmoud Shelbaieye headed home a centre from the right by midfielder Issa Alsapah.
A couple of minutes before changeover, midfielder Hasan Mahmoud found the target with a grounder after collecting a pass from Mahmoud Shelbaieye.
Bagan have failed to collect any point in the group so far, losing both their encounters, the first a 0-1 defeat away to Al Karama of Syria.
Al Wehdat, who drew their first match against Kuwait SC, have four points from two matches.
