Sri Lanka skipper Mahela Jayawardene said the 243-run victory over Bermuda in their opening World Cup match bucked their recent losing trend and hoped that it would sustain the momentum throughout the tournament.
"We put our heads down and concentrated on having a good start. Once we did that, things fell in place," Jayawardene said after the Group 'B' game in Port of Spain, Trinidad, on Wednesday.
"The last two years we have been playing good cricket. It's only in the last two months that we have not had a big win. Hopefully this will be the start of a good tournament."
The Lankans went into the tournament after a 1-2 series loss in India.
Jayawardene said that although his side posted 321 for six and there were three solid half-centuries, batting wasn't easy on the Queen's Park Oval wicket.
"The first 20 overs were very difficult. Upul Tharanga and Sanath Jayasuriya had to really work hard for their start," said the captain, who top scored with 85.
"Me and Sangakkara (76) decided to keep wickets in hand and accelerate in the last overs. Chamara Silva (55 no) played a good knock in the end."
Bermuda skipper Irvine Romaine said facing Lanka's quicks Lasith Malinga and Farveez Maharoof was a learning experience for his side.
"It was a mixed day. We were going up against one of the world's best sides and we dropped the captain the first ball. You can't do that," he said.
"But it was a good experience. I think we have done well. We were facing top quality pacers for the first time, it was a new experience."
