The first World Cup Super Eight match between Australia and the West Indies in Antigua on Tuesday was abandoned for the day due to rain.

Australia had scored 322 for 6 in their allotted 50 overs when rain intervened and prevented further play.

On Wednesday, when the match resumes, the West Indies will begin their chase.

Earlier, after Australia were put in to bat, Matthew Hayden hit a 143-ball 158. The Queensland left-hander, who scored 101 off 68 balls against South Africa in the first round for the fastest century in the World Cup, smashed 14 fours and four sixes in his power-packed innings.

Captain Ricky Ponting (35) and Michael Clarke (41) lent valuable support to Hayden while Shane Watson (33 not out) ensured a strong finish for the three-time champions.
