Scorecard:

A single off Zaheer by Cook helped raise the 50-run partnership for the second wicket for the visitors. This partnership has helped build further on the foundation laid by the openers.

The visitors end the day at 216 for one, trailing India's score by just 100 runs but with nine of their wickets in tact they can expect a big lead. 

Captain Cook, having led from the front, is unbeaten on 136, and giving him company is Jonathan Trott on 21.

As regards India, suffice to say they have a lot to think ahead of Day Three.

Scorecard:

Jonathan Trott comes out to join his captain at the crease. It's a perfect time for him to try and regain his form. 

He gets off the mark with a boundary off Ojha and seems at ease for the first time in the series. 

Cook is going from strength to strength as expected. A single from his blade off Ashwin helps the visitors reach the 200-run mark, in the 62nd over.

14:48   Eden Test Live! Ojha provides India the breakthrough
Scorecard:

Pragyan Ojha finally provides India the breakthrough, getting Compton (57) out leg before.

Umpire Rod Tucker seemed unconvinced to begin with but eventually raised his finger. 

Compton's 137-ball knock was inclusive of six hits to the fence and one over it and he helped his captain put on 165 runs for the opening wicket.

Scorecard:

Pragyan Ojha replaces Ishant (14-5-35-0) in the 51st over and Cook hits the third ball to the midwicket fence to help his team get past the 150-run mark. 

Three runs in Ashwin's next over helps Cook complete his 23rd Test hundred, his fifth against India and his third in succession in this series. 

He has literally led England from the front. 

England 156 without loss after 52 overs.

When Cook reaches 88 he beccomes the 11th English batsman, and 41st overall, to reach 7, 000 Test runs. 

A single off Ishant helps Compton register his maiden Test fifty. 

England 144 without loss after 47 overs.

Scorecard:

England go into tea comfortably-placed at 121 without loss. 

Alastair Cook is batting on 80, carrying on with his impressive run in the series, and giving him company is Compton on 41.

The Indian bowling has been disappointing so far.

Scorecard:

Spinners are operating from both the ends now and to give credit where it is due, the English openers are playing them pretty well. 

Ashwin, in fact is going at almost six runs per over. 

A boundary by Compton off Ojha helps the visitors reach the 100-run mark (in the 36th over).

England 104 for no loss after 37 overs.
12:55   Eden Test Live! Cook registers 30th Test fifty in style
Scorecard:

Pragyan Ojha is introduced into the attack immediately after drinks, replacing an ineffective Ashwin (5-1-23-0). It's a maiden.

Cook hits the first ball of Zaheer's next over straight past the bowler for what is his ninth boundary. The shot helps him reach 49 and he duly completes his 30th Test fifty with a single of  the next ball. 

It is his fifth fifty against India and marks the continuation of his good form. 

Compton smashes Ojha for a six in the latter's second over. 

England 74 without loss after 28 overs.

Scorecard:

After conceding nine overs in his first over after lunch, Ashwin sees Cook come forward and smash him for a six in his second.

A single off the next ball helps the visitors reach the 50-run mark, in the 20th over.

Cook has now started to assert himself and that is not good news for India.

Scorecard:

The visitors are fortunate at the outset of the second session.

In the third over after resumption, Zaheer induces an edge off Cooks (on 17) blade but Cheteshwar Pujara fails to hold on to the catch. 

Ashwin replces Zaheer (8-2-21-0) in the attack in the 18th over. Cook welcomes him with a boundary. 

England 34 without loss after 18 overs.

Scorecard:

Virat Kohli is having extensive discussion with Dhoni. A probable future captain probably taking tips from the incumbent. 

Spin is introduced in the 10th over, R Ashwin replacing Ishant (4-1-7-0). It is a maiden. 

Ishant replaces Zaheer (5-2-14-0) in the next over. 

England go into lunch at 22 without loss (after 11 overs). Their openers have ensured they don't lose a wicket ahead of the breather.
10:29   Eden Test Live! England get off to a good start
Scorecard:

Alastair Cook and Nick Compton open the batting for England and it is Zaheer Khan beginning with ball for India. 

Cook cuts the final ball left of point and the visitors get off the blocks with the resultant boundary. The England captain helps himself to a second boundary in Zaheer's next over.

Ishant Sharma shares the new ball. He concedes only two runs in his first two overs.

England 10 without loss after four overs.
10:04   Eden Test Live! Dhoni makes 52, India bowled out for 316
Scorecard:

A six by Dhoni off Panesar helps India get past the 300-run mark. He celebrated the same with another six in the next ball.

Pragyan Ojha is also holding firm. The home side has added 16 runs for the last wicket to frustrate the visitors.

A boundary off Finn helps Dhoni reach his 27th Test fifty, his seventh against England.

However, the bowler hits back next ball, having Dhoni (52) caught by Swann.

India bowled out for 316 in 105 overs.
09:26   Eden Test Live! Panesar deflates India with quick wickets

MS Dhoni made clear Indias intention at the very outset, smashing the second ball of the day (by James Anderson) to the fence.

The home side was prepared to take the attack to the opposition.

Anderson did manage to square up Zaheer Khan (6) in his second over and got a thick edge. He was unfortunate though as Graeme Swann put down the chance at second slip.

The blemish cost the visitors nine runs to be precise, five wides followed by Zaheer rubbing it in with a boundary of the final ball of the over.

Zaheer didnt last long though, Monty Panesar trapping him leg before in the very next over.

The spinner returned to rattle Ishant Sharmas (0) timber for his fourth wicket. 

08:54   Eden Test Live! Tough day ahead for India

India will resume on 273 for seven on Day Two of the third Test at Eden Gardens. 

The ground is slowly filling up. It is going to be a tough day for India. MS Dhoni, on 22, will have to play a long innings.

England clearly have the edge.
