16:45   Captain Kohli helps India escape with a draw

India 172-6 (52.3 ovs); Target to win: 301 | Scorecard

Captain Virat Kohli hit 49 not out to help India draw the first Test against England after they were set 301 for victory.

A superb innings under from the Indian captain as he battled hard on the final day when the other Indian top order batsmen gave their wicket away quite easily.

Kohli got good support from Ashwin as they put on 47 runs for the fifth wicket but saw 15.2 overs during their partnership that proved to be instrumental in the final result.

India will need to come up with a much improved showing in the next Test match, starting in Vizag from Thursday, November 17.
16:31

India 163-6 (51 ovs); Target to win: 301 | Scorecard

The match is as good as over with just seven minutes remaining and India having four wickets in hand. Even a wicket at this stage would see India use up atleast 4-5 minutes.

Looks like Kohli is going for his half-century as he flicks Rashid against the spin over midwicket for a four to take his score to 46.

Kohli goes for another big shot over mid-off but mishits it and is lucky that it falls safely on the leg side. Just five minutes left for stumps.
16:28   Captain Kohli takes India closer to a draw

India 156-6 (50 ovs); Target to win: 301 | Scorecard

Jadeja is defending well but he is not missing any chance to score runs. A full toss from Moeen is through the midwicket region for three runs while Kohli defends the last two balls.

Just one over of the mandatory 90 overs of the day left for England and they will surely bowl another three-four taking into account their over rate at the moment.

Jadeja lofts Rashid back over his head for a four to race to 23 from 21 balls, having hit four boundaries.

India are 156 for six in 50 overs with just eight minutes for stumps and it looks like they have done enough for now.
16:20   Captain Kohli holds forte for India

India 149-6 (47 ovs); Target to win: 301 | Scorecard

Moeen bowling five fielders close in to someone like Kohli, who defends the second ball and gets a glove as the fielder at silly point jumps across but can't get to the catch.

Kohli whips the fourth ball to deep midwicket for a single to give Jadeja the strike for the last two balls of the over. Ravindra Jadeja turns the next ball on the leg side for a single to get off the mark.

In the next over, Jadeja goes back and hits a short ball from Rashid through the off-side for a four.

England are rushing through their overs with Moeen and Rashid bowling quickly to ensure they bowl as many over as possible with 16 minutes left in the match.

Jadeja drives a full toss from Rashid straight down the ground back past mid-on for a four. The next ball is short as Jadeja pulls it over midwicket for another four as India slowly inch closer towards a draw.

16:07   Saha dismissed for 9, India lose 6th wicket

India 132-6 (43 ovs); Target to win: 301 | Scorecard

England make a change as left-arm spinner Ansari comes into the attack. Kohli turns the first ball fine on the leg side for two runs before he defends the rest of the over.

Another change for England as part-timer Joe Root comes into the attack. He bowls one short as Ashwin cuts it past point for a four but Root has managed to send down a quick over in a couple of minutes.

Kohli has batted in the same vein right from the start and has never looked in any kind of trouble. Ansari drops short as Kohli rocks back and slaps it through the covers for a boundary before Root follows up with a very quick over.

Ansari bowls another long hop and Ashwin punches it through the covers for his fourth boundary of the innings. The left-arm spinner continues to dish out freebies, as Ashwin hits another short ball through the off-side for the second four of the over.

The last ball is again short and Ashwin, who is waiting on the backfoot, helps himself to the third four of the over, cutting it through the vacant thirdman region.

However, Ashwin gets carried away as he drives a full delivery into the hands of the fielder in the covers to be dismissed for 36.

Ashwin played a good hand with the bat, as put on 47 runs for the fifth wicket with Kohli as the duo stayed at the crease for 15.2 overs.

The wicket of Ashwin opens the door slightly for England yet again but Kohli has held forte quite well for the last couple of hours.

Zafar bowls a beauty to Kohli, that bounced much higher than expected leaving even Kohli a bit stunned. And the Indian captain sees the funny side of things as he asks the leg umpire to call it the one bouncer for the over! Kohli was lucky that the ball was not on the stumps else he would have ended up gloving it.

Moeen comes back as England keep juggling the bowlers around, hoping to get wickets with around 30 minutes left for stumps.

Surprising choice from Wriddhiman Saha as he comes down the track to Moeen and lofts him over mid-on for a four.

Moeen overpitches and Saha drives him through mid-off for another boundary and England won't mind seeing the batsmen drive against the spin through the off-side.

Saha comes down the track to Rashid and defends it back to the bowler as England's players appeal for a catch. Umpire Kumar Dharmasena refers it to the third umpire with a soft signal saying 'Out' and the decision stays as Saha chipped it straight back to the bowler.

India suffer a big blow as Saha is dismissed for nine, leaving Kohli with just tailenders for company.

Ravindra Jadeja is capable with the bat and he knows this pitch better than anyone and how India would want him to stay at the wicket for atleast another 20 minutes or so.
15:45   Kohli, Ashwin steady India after quick wickets

India 95-4 (34 ovs); Target to win: 301 | Scorecard

Moeen twice hits Ashwin on the pads off successive deliveries as he comes forward to defend but is beaten by the turn. Both appeals are turned down before England decide to review the second one and it stays with the umpire's call since the ball was just clipping the outside of the leg stump.

Ashwin then leans forward and drives Moeen through the covers for a four.

At the last drinks break on the final day, India have reached 95 for four in 35 overs. England have just an hour's play to force a result in this match.

Kohli has batted well to score 30 from 50 balls and has got good support from Ashwin, who has made 15.
15:12   Rahane fails with the bat, India in trouble

India 85-4 (29 ovs); Target to win: 301 | Scorecard

Ajinkya Rahane fails with the bat to leave India in further strife. He looks to hit Moeen against the turn through the off-side but fails to connect and is bowled for one as India are reduced to 70 for four.

Moeen got it to turn big as Rahane went back for the cut but was beaten and the ball hit the stumps before going on to hit the stumps.

This could be a very nervous 90 minutes for the Indians with Kohli in the middle and just the lower order for company.

Kohli has looked in complete control as he nudges Rashid fine on the leg side for a four to race to 25 from 26 balls. Kohli, who was out hit wicket in the first innings,  needs to be careful with his backfoot which was again way back in the crease.

Rashid is giving the Indian batsmen a lot of problems as he gets some deliveries to turn big and bounce a bit more. Ashwin plays a nice drive through the covers for a four to get off the mark in style.

14:52   Vijay falls for 31, India lose 3rd wicket

India 70-3 (23 ovs); Target to win: 301 | Scorecard

Leg-spinner Rashid to start off the final session of the match with England still having a glimmer of hope.

Kohli makes a confident and positive start as he drives a full delivery from Rashid through the covers for a four and keeps strike with a single from the last ball.

Off-spinner Moeen from the other end. Kohli gets an inside edge back on to his pads as he looks to defend with four close in fielders, including two short legs and a leg slip.  The India captain again keeps the strike with a single from the last ball.

Rashid bowls a full delivery on the pads to Kohli, who flicks it to deep midwicket for two runs. He slaps the next ball straight down the ground past mid-on for a four followed three singles off the last three balls to get nine from the over.

Rashid keeps England's hopes alive with the vital wicket of Vijay, who is caught at short leg for 31. The right-hander came forward to defend but got an inside edge which went off his pads to Hameed, who accepted the easy offering.

India in a slight spot of bother on 70 for three in 23 overs, with another 26 overs remaining in the day.

14:23   Pujara dismissed for 18, India 49-2 at tea on Day 5

TEA- DAY 5

India 49-2 (18 ovs); Target to win: 301 | Scorecard

A crucial wicket for England in the penultimate over of the post-lunch session and it was the vital scalp of Pujara, who is difficult to dislodge once he gets his eye in.

Infact, he was unlucky to be given out but he himself taken the DRS after being given LBW to a ball pitched outside the leg stump. But overall, it was a poor decision by the on-field umpire.

India are 49 for two in 18 overs, with another 261 runs for victory with 31 overs remaining in the match. On the other hand, England need a couple of wickets early after tea to trigger panic in the Indian camp.

Vijay has taken a few chances, especially against the spinners, to be unbeaten on 29 from 64 balls.
14:12   Pujara dismissed for 18, India lose 2nd wicket

India 49-2 (17 ovs); Target to win: 301 | Scorecard

Vijay sweeps Moeen but gets a top edge which goes over short fine leg for a single. He comes down the track to the last ball of the over and goes for another big hit down the ground but misses and is lucky that the ball hit his pads.

Leg-spinner Adil Rashid comes into the attack. He bowls an unplayable delivery, turn and bounce, as Vijay is beaten trying to drive it through the off-side.

Rashid strikes in his next over with the wicket of Pujara, who is trapped leg before wicket for 18. The right-hander went back to a full delivery to defend but missed and was struck right in front of the stumps. He doesn't take the DRS and makes his way back to the pavilion and the Indian dressing room including all viewers on TV are shocked as replays show the ball pitched outside the leg stump.

Infact, Pujara's partner Vijay did him no favours by turning away when the umpire ruled him out. He was the best judge from the other end, but Vijay thought it was gone and he didn't suggest otherwise while Pujara was walking back.

England have a slight opening as India are reduced to 49 for two in 17 overs.

13:59   Vijay, Pujara rally India after early wicket

India 40-1 (13 ovs); Target to win: 301 | Scorecard

Spin introduced early, in the sixth over, in the form of Zafar Ansari. Pujara welcomes him in some style, driving the first ball through the covers for a four before he plays out the rest of the over.

In the spinner's next over, Vijay comes down the track and lofts him over mid-on for a four. He repeats the shot two balls later but this time he doesn't get enough elevation and hits it powerfully to the right of Ansari, but he fails to stop it and watches it speed down the ground for a four.

Vijay looking to be positive as he paddles Moeen Ali, who is called into the attack to replace Woakes, for a four as India recover to reach 31 for one in 10 overs.

The India opener chips down the track again and this time he makes room and lofts Ansari over the off-side for another boundary.
13:23   India lose Gambhir early after being set 310 for victory

India 12-1 (5 ovs); Target to win: 301 | Scorecard

Broad bowls a good short delivery to Vijay, who looks to defend off the backfoot before taking his eyes off at the very last minute. He is lucky that the ball struck on the gloves but fell safely away from the close in fielder at short leg.

Cheteshwar Pujara finally gets India off the mark from the last ball of the fourth over, hitting a full delivery from Woakes through the covers for a four to break the sequence of 23 straight dot balls.

In the next over, Vijay slaps it square on the off-side through point for a boundary to get off the mark. He edges the last ball as the fielder at short thirdman gives chase but is unable to stop the four.

13:13   Gambhir out for a duck after England set India 310 for win

India 0-1 (2 ovs); Target to win: 301 | Scorecard

Stuart Broad to bowl for England, who are looking for early wickets with the new ball before their spinners can work some magic on a fifth day track.

Broad makes a tidy start, with a maiden to Murali Vijay, who as always is watchful at the start.

Chris Woakes gives England a dream start with the wicket of Gautam Gambhir, who is caught at second slip off Chris Woakes in the second over of the innings.

India have lost a wicket without even registering a single run on the board in the first two overs.
12:52   England declare on 260-3, set India 310 for victory

England 260-3d (74.3 ovs) & 537 vs India 488 | Scorecard

Stokes walks across his stumps and whips a full delivery from Yadav from outside the off-stump over the fine leg fence for a four. The next ball is short but he misses the pull shot and is hit on the gloves as Yadav makes a good comeback, conceding just two more for the rest of the over.

Cook goes for a big hit down the ground but is caught at long-off after a good innings of 130, hitting 13 fours in his 243-ball knock, to give Ashwin his first wicket of the innings after 23.3 overs.

That wicket sees England declare on 260-3, setting India a target a 310 for victory with 49 overs left in the day.

England scored 49 runs in 57 balls in the post-lunch session to give their bowlers a chance to push for victory.
12:42   Cook hits century, England's lead crosses 300

England 253-2 (74 ovs) & 537 vs India 488 | Scorecard

Mishra bowling a poor line, on the pads to Cook, who sweeps it twice through the leg side for boundaries. He then comes down the track and again Mishra bowls a full toss on the pads as Cook despatches it through the leg side for the third four of the over, which goes for 14 runs.

Mishra has so much rough outside the left-hander's off-stump but he has been faulty with his line after lunch.

Four singles off Ashwin, who has resorted to bowling it well outside the leg-stump to keep the batsmen quiet. Cook and Stokes have brought up the 50-run stand from 65 balls for the third wicket as England have done well to keep the runs flowing after the lunch break, scoring 32 runs in six overs since the resumption.

England are 243 for two in 72 overs with an overall lead of 292 runs with 55 overs still remaining in the match.

Yadav replaces Mishra, who was hit for three fours in his previous over. The first ball is wide as Cook reaches out and hits it wide of thirdman for two runs.

The next ball is in the slot outside the off-stump as Cook thrashes it through the covers for a four. The England captain has been in smashing form after lunch as the visitors look to get India into bat as soon as possible.

Yadav beats Cook with one that goes across the left-hander as he throws his bat and the Indians go up in appeal immediately but the umpire turns it down. The Indians take the DRS but replays show that Cook missed the ball by a long way. That was a poor call by the Indians as they waste a referral.

Cook edges the last ball to thirdman for a single to bring up England's 250, in the 73rd over.

Four singles in the next over by Ashwin, who is yet to take a wicket in 23 overs, sees England's lead cross the 300-run mark, with 53 overs left in the day.
12:30

England 226-2 (70 ovs) & 537 vs India 488 | Scorecard

Mishra to start off after the lunch break. Cook defends the first three balls before he takes a single from the fourth on the off-side.

Stokes gets going immediately as he reverse sweeps the first ball he faces after lunch for a four through point.

Spin from both ends as Ashwin is called in from the other end. Cook plays the paddle sweep but can't beat the fielder at short fine leg inside the circle, who has been stationed. He repeats the shot, this time quite fine, for a single to bring Stokes on strike, who also picks one.

Ashwin turns one right across Stoke, who is beaten all ends up, and Cook is also beaten later in the over outside the off-stump as again the ball turns.

Mishra bowling well, particularly keeping in mind India's ploy of keeping the runs down. Stokes, for whom India have five fielders on the boundary, heaves Mishra on the leg side but can't get enough power for just a single.

Cook looking to get on the attack as he comes down the track and lofts Ashwin over the covers for a four to bring up 1000 runs against India in some style.

11:37   Cook hits 30th Test century as England swell lead

LUNCH - DAY 5

England 211-2 (66 ovs) & 537 vs India 488 | Scorecard

Captain Cook continues his superb run in India, hitting 106 not out to take England to 211 for two in 66 overs at the lunch break on the final day, to stretch their lead to 260 runs with two sessions left in the match.

England were once again untroubled with the bat as the openers put on 180 for the first wicket before the young Hameed was caught and bowled by Mishra for 82.

Joe Root tried to attack the Indian bowlers but got a top edge and was caught by Saha off Mishra for four.

Once again, it was a hard struggle for the Indian bowlers, with only Mishra taking two wickets to bring some relief for the hosts.

Ashwin and Jadeja, who bowled 19 and 15 overs respectively, went wicketless.

England have made their intentions clear by sending Stokes at No. 4, who is unbeaten on six. They will surely look to play some shots after the lunch break and give India around 50 overs to survive.
11:33   Cook hits 30th Test century to continue good run vs India

England 211-2 (66 ovs) & 537 vs India 488 | Scorecard

Cook gets another easy boundary as Mishra drifts on the pads which is turned fine on the leg side for a four.

Mishra strikes again in his next over, and this time with the big wicket of England's best batsman -- Joe Root.

Root, tries to force the issue by trying to slog sweep but gets a top edge and is caught by Saha for four, close to the stumps.

Are England looking to get some quick runs? After Root's dismissal in the search for quick runs, they have now sent Ben Stokes at No. 4. The left-hander scored a century in the first innings and is capable of getting some quick runs.

Jadeja again gets some extra bounce as Cook turns it on the leg side for one and Stokes also gets a single on the leg side. Another single takes the England captain to 99, just a run away from his 30th Test century.

He brings up the landmark from 194 balls with a single to long-on for his fifth Test century in India, the most by an overseas batsman -- going past Everton Weekes, Clive Lloyd and Hashim Amla, who all had four centuries in India.

This has been a superb innings from the England captain as he leads from the front to put his team in a position from where they can possibly push for an unlikely victory in the last two sessions.

Jadeja gets one to turn big, going wide on the leg side as wicketkeeper Saha also fails to collect it, to give away four byes.

England are keep the scoreboard moving with regular singles before Stokes slog sweeps Mishra over midwicket for a four.

Shami to bowl the final over of the session. Cook plays with caution for the first five balls before taking a single from the final ball of the session.
11:06   Hameed out for 82, England lose 1st wicket

England 181-1 (59 ovs) & 537 vs India 488 | Scorecard

Hameed drives Yadav on the off-side for a single as England's lead touches the 200-run mark. Cook looking to be a bit more positive as he cuts a wide delivery from Yadav through point for a four before they get two singles from the next over by Ashwin.

Local lad Ravindra Jadeja comes into the attack in place of Ashwin. The first ball turns big and hits Cook on the pads as the Indian appeal for LBW but in vain.

Two balls later, he goes for the cut but gets a bottom edge which is dropped by wicketkeeper Saha. That was low and Saha hardly had any time to react as Cook went right back to cut it.

He gets the next ball through the vacant thirdman region as Shami runs after it from inside the circle but fails to stop the ball and Kohli is not impressed as England get a boundary with Cook getting into the 80s and going past his partner Hameed for the first time in the innings.

Hameed has a close shave as he runs for a quick single and jumps trying to avoid the ball as Pujara gets the direct hit but luckily the bat was grounded in the crease.

Yadav overpitches and offers some width as Cook plays a handsome drive through the covers for a four as none of the Indian fielders moved. Three more singles as England seem to be trying to make a move at increasing the tempo.

Cook employs the sweep against Jadeja for two runs to fine leg before he picks one and Hameed does the same. Cook again goes for the sweep off the last ball but misses as Jadeja appeals for LBW but it is turned down.

England have scored 22 runs from the last four overs to reach 179 for no loss in 58 overs, to register their best opening partnership in India, while also stretching their lead to 228 runs with a minimum of 69 overs left in the day.

Leg-spinner Amit Mishra comes into the attack. Cook again brings out his favourite sweep shot for a single to fine leg before Mishra makes the breakthrough with the wicket of Hameed.

The right-hander, who played an impressive innings of 82, hits one straight back to Mishra, who does well to take the catch on his follow through to end a 180-run opening stand.

But hold on, the umpires are checking for the front foot no-ball with Mishra getting the benefit of the doubt with no concrete evidence to suggest that he had overstepped.

Joe Root gets off the mark with a single before the Indians appeal for a caught down the leg side but to no avail.

10:48   Cook, Hameed hit 50s but England make slow progress

England 150-0 (52 ovs) & 537 vs India 488 | Scorecard

Ashwin has bowled with a slightly different action on Day 5, bowling a bit side on and trying to use his body at bit more than normal. He has been able to keep the two batsmen quiet by looking to bowl a tight line.

Change at the other end as Umesh Yadav replaces Shami. India have employed 7-2 field against Hameed, who plays out a maiden over as the pacer keeps it outside the off-stump as just 20 runs have come from the first 10 overs on Day 5.

Meanwhile, Cook gets a rare boundary as he cuts a short ball from Ashwin behind point for a four. He then gets a bottom edge as he looks to sweep and the England captain is lucky that the ball falls between two fielders at midwicket and mid-on.

Hameed goes after a wide delivery but ends up getting an outside edge for a boundary past the slips for a four.

The England opener is hit on the pads off the last ball as the Indians go up in appeal but it is turned down by umpire Kumar Dharmasena. The Indians decide against taking the DRS and rightly so as the replays show that the ball got an inside edge and might also be slipping down the leg side.

The first hour has been quite lacklustre with both teams not willing to make the first move. England have scored just 36 runs from 15 overs at just over two runs per over to reach 150 for no loss in 52 overs, to swell their lead to 199 runs.

On the other hand, India have been content to keep things and just look to stop the flow of runs and hope England's batsmen throw their wickets away in search for quick runs.
10:03

England 132-0 (45 ovs) & 537 vs India 488 | Scorecard

Ashwin beats Hameed with one that goes straight through and a bit quicker as the right-hander plays for turn, twice in the over.

Shami bowls another tidy over, giving away two singles as India are content to keep things quiet, by not giving away fours. Hameed gets an edge in that over which is well stopped by Saha diving to his right before he takes a single to thirdman.

Ashwin has settled into a good rhythm as he bowls another good over to right-hander Hameed.

Cook makes most of some width from Shami, steering it past gully for a four as Mishra's dive goes in vain on the thirdman fence.

England have scored 18 runs in eight overs bowled so far in the morning session to reach 132 for no loss in 45 overs, for an overall lead of 181 runs.
image
09:47   Cook, Hameed hit 50s to build England's score on Day 5

England 124-0 (41 ovs) & 537 vs India 488 | Scorecard

Off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin to open the bowling on Day 5. India have a well spread out field with just a slip in place for Alastair Cook, who drives the second ball through the covers for a single to the fielder in the deep.

Just a short leg and no slips in place for Hameed against Ashwin, who gets the ball to turn and the young opener is content to defend it.

Pacer Mohammed Shami to bowl from the other end. He bowls a quiet over with nothing much happening as Cook picks a single to deep on the off-side for the only run of the over.

Ashwin gets one to turn big as Cook is caught in two minds before deciding to let it go through and then defends the rest of the over. Ashwin seems to have settled into a good line and length to Cook, bowling it just outside the off-stump and make Cook come forward.

Shami gets Hameed to edge one but it goes in the gap between the wicketkeeper and slip for a four, anyways it would not have carried.

He taps it on the off-side for a single and Cook does the same off the next ball.

Shami keeps it short as Hameed turns it on the leg side for another run before Cook pulls a short ball to fine leg for a single to bring up his half-century from 122 balls.

09:17   Will England push for victory on Day 5?

England 114-0 (37 ovs) & 537 vs India 488 | Scorecard

Welcome to the coverage of the fifth and final day of the first Test between England and India in Rajkot on Sunday.

England are sitting pretty on 114 for no loss in 37 with an overall lead of 163 runs with minimum 90 overs left in the day.

It remains to be seen if England will try and make a match of it by playing positively in the morning session and setting India some target with around 60 overs to bat. Or will the visitors be content to bat for a draw?

It would be interesting to see how the first hour goes, which would set the tone for the rest of the day.

If England get off to a start, they would no doubt be keen to push the issue with a long batting line-up to follow. On the other hand, if India can claim a couple of early wickets, then they would finish any hopes England would have of trying to push for victory.

All eyes will be on the young Hameed, who impressed yet again as he hit a half-century on debut to remain unbeaten on 62 at stumps, while Cook was content to play second fiddle on a patient innings of 46.

The Indian bowlers toiled hard and except for a few deliveries which turned and bounced, there was not enough help to trouble the two England openers, who batted solidly and showed great resolve to keep the spinners at bay.

Earlier, England secured a 48-run first innings lead after bowling out the Indians for 488. The Indians had Ashwin to thank for cutting down the lead as the all-rounder played a good innings on 70, adding 64 runs for the seventh wicket with Saha, after they had lost Kohli and Rahane quite early in the morning session.
