SA 107-3 (26 ovs) vs Ind | Scorecard

A wonderful session of Test cricket as South Africa counter-attacked after a few early wickets to recover to 107 for three in 26 overs at lunch on Day 1.

Bhuvneshwar picked up three wickets in his first three overs to leave the hosts reeling on 12 for three, with the wickets of Elgar, Markram and Amla.

However, De Villiers came out attacking and set the tone with four boundaries in a single off Bhuvneshwar.

He raced to 59 from 65 balls, while du Plessis made a solid 37 from 67 balls as the duo were involved in a brisk fourth-wicket stand of 95 runs to lead South Africa's superb comeback.

Bhuvneshwar was the pick of the bowlers, as he picked up three for 39 in nine overs but Shami disappointed in his nine overs in the morning session.

Debutant Jasprit Bumrah also failed to make much of an impact as he sent down seven overs for 31 runs.

Earlier, South Africa captain Faf du Plessis won the toss and elected to bat in the first Test against India at Newlands.

South Africa opted to play with four seamers, which means a return to the Test arena of Dale Steyn. The 34-year-old, five wickets from becoming South Africas highest Test wicket-taker, has been out for over a year with a shoulder injury.

India handed a first test cap to bowler Jasprit Bumrah after his good form in recent One day Internationals. They picked three seamers and also have all-rounder Hardik Pandya with a lone specialist spinner in Ravichandran Ashwin.

The major surprise was the axing of vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane, who has a good record overseas as they decided to stick with the in-form Rohit Sharma.
