India 27-3 (9 ovs) vs SA 286 | Scorecard

South Africa end the opening day on a high as they reduce India to 27 for three at stumps after they had posted 286 in their first innings.

Vernon Philander got the early breakthrough with the wicket of Murali Vijay (1) before Shikhar Dhawan gave his wicket away to Dale Steyn, attempting a reckless shot but he only managed a top edge.

Cheteshwar Pujara survived a testing spell to reach five, while Rohit Sharma was yet to get off the mark but it was South Africa, who gained the upperhand at stumps on Day 1.

Earlier, South Africa recovered after a horror start to post 286 in their first innings. AB de Villiers (65) and Faf du Plessis led the recovery with a 114-run partnership for the fourth wicket.

The lower order also left the Indians frustrated with useful contributions with the bat. Quinton de Kock hit a quickfire 43 from 40 balls, Vernon Philander made 23, Keshav Maharaj scored a useful 35 and Kagiso Rabada made 26, while Dale Steyn was unbeaten on 16 as the last four wickets added 82 runs to help the hosts finish on a high.
