21:56   Hetmyer, Hope hit centuries to lift WI to win

WI 291-2 (47.5 ovs) vs India 287-8 | Scorecard

Shimron Hetmyer smashed an entertaining century, while Shai Hope played the supporting role to perfection with a carefully-constructed hundred to power West Indies to an emphatic eight-wicket victory against India in the first ODI in Chennai, on Sunday.

Chasing 288 for victory, Hetmyer took the game away from India as he blasted 139 from 106 balls, hitting seven sixes and 11 fours. His 218-run partnership with Hope, who played second fiddle with a steady knock of 102 from 151 balls, not only revived West Indies after an early wicket but also put them in command in the middle overs.

Nicholas Pooran provided the finishing touches with his quickfire 29 from 23 balls as West Indies cruised to 291 for two in 47.5 overs, to win with 13 balls to spare and take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

Interestingly, it was a rare match in Chennai when the spinners from both teams failed to pick a single wicket.

Earlier, Rishabh Pant struck his maiden half-century as India shrugged off a poor start to post a challenging 287 for eight in the first ODI after they were put into bat.

Shreyas Iyer (70 off 88), who is emerging as a solid number four, and Pant (71 off 69) paired up for a 114-run stand for the fourth wicket after India lost opener K L Rahul (6) and skipper Virat Kohli (4) in the seventh over of the innings.

Kuldeep gets his line wrong as he bowls a wide down the leg side to Hope.

Hope is beaten again last ball as he struggles to read Kuldeep's variation. He plays down the wrong line to the leg-spinner and is struck right in front of the stumps.

The umpire is not interested but Kuldeep convinces his captain Kohli to take the review. But the ball is doing too much and missing the leg stump as India end up losing their review.

Just two runs from the over as Kuldeep finishes his 10 over spell, giving away just 45 runs.

West Indies need 56 from the last 10 overs for victory.

But Shami gets revenge a few deliveries later as Hetmyer pulls the short ball straight to Iyer, who does well to hold on to the catch at deep midwicket. For once, Hetmyer failed to make proper connection and it resulted in his downfall but not after he had entertained the packed gathering at the M A Chidambaram stadium.

Hetmyer's terrific knock comes to an end after smashing 139 from 106 balls, hitting 11 fours and seven sixes, to single-handedly turn the game on it's head.

Hetmyer then drives the fifth ball down the ground for two runs before he pulls the last ball for a single on the leg side.

Medium pacer Dube is called back into the attack. A single to Hetmyer brings up the 200-run stand for the second wicket from as many balls.

Hope plays his part to perfection with a single before Hetmyer blasts Dube's half-tracker into the stands over midwicket for a six. He then pitches the next ball right up and this time Hetmyer smashes it through the covers for a four and keeps strike with a single off the last ball.

The experiment to play both Dube and Jadhav has backfired atleast with the ball, with the duo going for 53 runs from six overs combined.

Pacer Chahar comes back into the attack. Hetmyer gets a thick outside edge trying to drive it through the covers, which goes through the vacant slip region for a four.

Hetmyer is then beaten trying for a big shot before he hits the next ball straight to Iyer at long-on who puts down a straightforward catch.

Hetmyer, on 106, gets a lifeline as Iyer and the whole Indian team can't believe that the catch has been put down.

Hope makes it worse for India as he punches Chahar square on the off-side for a four and then takes a single off the last ball to get 10 runs from the over.

In the next over, Hetmyer takes on Jadeja with back to back sixes. The first ball was swung wide of long-on for a six before he swept the next outside the stadium.

Those two blows have severely dented India's chances in this contest and except for a few quick wickets, West Indies look set for victory.

WI 178-1 (33 ovs) vs India 287-8 | Scorecard

Hetmyer completes his century in the next over as he drives Kuldeep down to long-on. He brought up the landmark from just 85 balls, hitting eight fours and four sixes, to single-handedly keep West Indies in the contest.

A bit sloppy work on the field by the Indians allows Hetymer to take the second run off an overthrow.

That proves crucial as that extra run put Hetmyer back on strike and he deposits the next ball from Shami into the stands over square leg for a gigantic six as the pacer concedes 13 runs from the over.

Jadeja comes back into the attack. He gets the first ball to turn sharply as Hope is beaten and Pants whips off the ball in a flash but the batsman is safe.

Dube continues as Hetmyer slaps the first ball square on the off-side for a four.

Meanwhile, pacer Chahar is receiving some treatment on the edge of the boundary for some pain in his lower back area.

Hope is now taking a single practically every delivery to keep the scoreboard ticking from his end.

Without taking much of a risk, they easily collect eight runs from Dube's fourth over.

At the halfway stage, West Indies are well placed on 136 for one in 25 overs. The asking rate has fallen steeply in the last few overs, with 152 needed from 25 overs for victory as just over six per over.

WI 93-1 (20 ovs) vs India 287-8 | Scorecard

Jadeja doing well to keep things tight as he bowls another tight over, giving away just two singles with Hope again struggling to rotate the strike, with four dot balls in a row.

Interesting change from Kohli as he brings back pacer Chahar, to replace Kuldeep.

Even he does well to keep up the pressure by giving away just three singles as India continue with their tactics of drying up the boundaries and build up some pressure.

Nearly five overs have gone with a boundary being hit as India keep a check on things and force Hetmyer into making a mistake by trying to break the shackles.

The first ball is short and wide as Hetmyer crashes it square on the off-side for a four and slaps the next to sweeper cover for one.

Hetmyer (29) gets a lifeline as he escapes a run out opportunity. Hope had clipped the ball to midwicket where Kohli put in the dive. The two batsmen had a big 'yes no' moment before deciding to go throw for the single.

19:07   Why India's score was adjusted to 287

Why India's score was adjusted to 287, explains commentator Harsha Bhogle.

"India's total is 287, not 288. The no-ball (for height) on which Deepak Chahar was caught, counts as one (for the no-ball). Because the batsman was ruled not out on a review, the run scored off the bat wasn't counted (the fielding side would have thought the player was out)," he tweets.
19:05   Hope, Hetmyer steady WI after early wicket

WI 55-1 (12 ovs) vs India 287-8 | Scorecard

Kuldeep gets Hope to edge one as he looks to play the drive but Rohit fails to hold on to a tough chance to his left. The ball flew past wicketkeeper Pant and Rohit barely had time to react but he did well to get his hand to it and atleast save some runs.

Chahar makes the breakthrough with the wicket of Ambris, who is trapped leg before wicket for nine. The  right-hander plays all over a full incoming delivery trying to play it across the line on the leg side which he misses and is trapped plumb leg before wicket. Not surprisingly, he decides not to take the review as he walks away straightaway as West Indies lose an early wicket.

Shimron Hetmyer walks in at No 3. He edges the third ball he faces, poking at a wide delivery but it falls short of the slips before he takes a single off the last ball.

Windies struggling on 12-1 after five overs.

Cottrell to bowl the penultimate over. Debutant Shivam Dube picks a single to thirdman and Deepak Chahar takes one to point.

The pacer then bowls a wide down the leg side as he misses his line with the slower ball.

Dube then clips a full delivery, nearly a yorker, through midwicket for a four and then takes through the same region next ball and Chahar takes one off the last ball.

Paul to bowl the final over. Chahar sensibly clips the first ball on the leg side and takes a single to bring Dube back on strike.

Dube then crashes Paul over the covers for a couple as Pollard at long-off rushes to his right and puts in a desperate dive to stop the boundary.

Dube then holes out to long-on as he attempts to hit it out of the ground to be caught by Holder for nine.

Paul strikes again off the next delivery as Chahar swipes a full toss straight to Cottrell at deep square leg to be dismissed for three.

But the umpires check for the height of the full toss and the TV umpire confirms it is above waist height and rules it a no-ball.

Shami can't make most the free hit as Paul bowls a good yorker but Chahar calls him across him for a bye, to get back the strike.

Chahar gets two runs off the final delivery through the leg side as India finish on a healthy 288 for eight in their 50 overs.

He is beaten next ball trying to slash it square before he clips the third ball to deep square leg for two runs.

Jadhav picks a single on the off-side before Jadeja pushes the fifth ball to midwicket and is pushing for the second but his partner is not interested.

Medium pacer Paul is back into the attack. He strikes with the key wicket of Jadeja, who holes out to the fielder at long-on, after a cracking cameo of 40 from 35 balls.

Jadeja attempts a quick single as the fielder gets a direct hit but the umpire turns down the appeal for run out.

Interestingly, West Indies captain Pollard makes another late appeal and convinces the umpires to go for the review. It looks like he got some signal or indication from the dressing room that Jadeja was short and he instantly took up the case with umpire Shaun George, who realises his mistake and calls on the TV umpire to check it.

Replays show that Jadeja was short of his ground when the ball hit the stumps as the right-hander has to make his way back after a good hand of 21 from as many balls.

A little bit of drama as India end up losing both their well-set batsmen in the previous over, to be reduced to 270 for seven in 48 overs.

Cottrell comes back and he does well to keep the batsmen tied down, giving away just five runs, including a leg bye, in the 45th over.

Jadeja gets the much-needed boundary as he nudges Joseph past short fine leg for a four to get 10 runs from the over.

That boundary also raises the 50-run stand for the sixth wicket between the two batsmen from just 39 balls.
16:59   Pant out for 71; India lose 5th wicket

India 234-5 (43 ovs) vs WI | Scorecard

Jadeja can't get a run off the last two balls as Walsh concedes just four runs in the 41st over.

Pollard continues as three singles come from the first three balls before Jadeja glances the fifth ball fine on the leg side for a four, to get seven from the over.

Jadhav and Jadeja doing well to keep the runs coming through ones and twos and not try anything fancy in their quest to hit boundaries.

Seven runs from Walsh's fifth over as India reach 234 for five in 43 overs.

With seven overs remaining, India will look to hit a few boundaries in the coming overs and inch closer to the 300-run mark.

12:33   Confident India start as favourites vs WI

Welcome to the coverage of the first One-Day International between India and West Indies in Chennai on Sunday.

Having clinched the T20I series recently, India will have their tails up when they play West Indies in the first One-day International of the three-match rubber in Chennai on Sunday, seeking a 10th straight bilateral ODI series win against the side from the Caribbean.

Virat Kohli's men have the momentum after winning the T20 series with a splendid batting performance in Mumbai where Rohit Sharma and K L Rahul, who is expected to continue as the opener in the absence of Dhawan, and the captain himself displayed terrific form.

It remains to be seen if the team decides to hand Mayank Agarwal a debut after he was drafted in as replacement for Dhawan. The Karnataka batsman has been in top form in the Tests and has joined the national team after featuring in the Ranji Trophy game against Tamil Nadu in Dindigul.

Shreyas Iyer has done well in the opportunities he has received and is likely to be slotted at No. 4. Former captain Anil Kumble, too, has favoured the Mumbai player batting at No.4 in the ODI series against the the West Indies.

The focus will be on wicketkeeper-batsman Rishab Pant, who has been under fire for his unimpressive performances with the bat and the gloves. The first ODI could be another chance for him to justify the faith shown by Kohli and the team management.

It will be interesting to see if the spin duo of Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav reunite after last playing together in the World Cup, as the Chepauk surface is expected to aid the slow bowlers.

The experienced Mohammed Shami and Deepak Chahar will most probably form the pace attack and would face a stern test against the aggressive West Indies batting line-up.

An intriguing battle is on the cards with the Indian team favourites to add the ODI series to the T20I win but the unpredictable West Indies can spring a surprise or two.
