1st ODI: Australia beat India by 34 runs, lead series 1-0

Australia beat India by 34 runs in the first ODI at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Saturday.

Australia take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. 

With this win, Australia become the first team to have 1000 wins across all formats.
 
After putting up 288 on the board, Australia pacemen Richardson and Behrendorff made early inroads as the match ebbed and flowed.

Rohit and Dhoni batted to steady India's innings but once Dhoni was gone, India lost wickets at regular intervals and fell short by 34 runs.

Richardson was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 4 for 26 off his 10 overs.

Stoinis comes on to bowl the final over as Shami is the new man in.

Bhuvi and Shami get a single each before Bhuvi clobbers the ball through covers for a four. 

After a dot, Bhuvi has been dropped by Handscomb. The batsmen take a single.

Shami is caught off the last ball of the over as he skies the ball to hand Maxwell an easy catch. 

India lose 9 wickets.


Siddle comes back into the attack, and his slower ball is hammered past backward point for a four.

Bhuvi and Kuldeep take the singles and twos before Kuldeep tries to go after the bowling only to hand a catch to Khawaja at deep mid-wicket. 

Kuldeep goes for 3 as 9 runs and a wicket come off the over.



Stoinis continues and Bhuvi is taking him on as he gets back-to-back boundaries.

Bhuvi and Kuldeep take a single each before Bhuvi gets a life off the last ball off the over as he is dropped by Khawaja in the deep.




Richardson continues as he bowls his final over. 

The batsmen take 4 singles as Richardson's spell comes to an end.



Kuldeep is the new man in.

The batsmen had crossed and Bhuvi tries to go after the bowling, thankfully for him he has been dropped by Khawaja in the deep and he gets a couple.


A dot to end the over as 9 and a wicket come off it.


Stoinis continues and both batsmen have taken a single each. 

Rohit gets a four over mid-off. He is out next ball as he tries to go after the bowling, this time he hits the ball straight to Maxwell as he is dismissed for 133.

The batsmen had crossed, Rohit gets a single.

Bhuvi is the new man in and he starts with digging out the yorker.

Richardson does well and Bhuvi does better to see him off as just one run and a wicket comes in the over. 


Richardson brought back into the attack and he strikes! 

Just when it looked like India were up to the chase, Jadeja tries to go after the short ball and only manages to hand it straight into the hands of Marsh at deep backward point.
 


Stoinis comes back into the attack and he bowls a slower one as Rohit mistimes. Again he is lucky to not to send it down the fielder's throat.

After a dot, Jadeja then gets a quick single.

After a dot, Rohit then gets back-to-back boundaries, a six and a four to keep India in the chase.





Lyon continues and Jadeja happy to keep the scorecard ticking.

Lyon letting the ball hang in the air, Rohit slams the ball over long-on for a six.

Next ball is a single. 

Jadeja plays two dots as five come off the over. 



Maxwell comes back into the attack and has Rohit in sorts of trouble even as the batsman was lucky to not get out caught as the ball falls just short of the fielder.

9 runs come off the over.  



Lyon comes back into the attack and gives four in the over.

Jadeja is the new man in and after a dot, gets off the mark with a single.

Rohit then gets a couple to get to his 22nd ODI hundred. A subdued celebration.

He gets a single off the last ball as 4 runs and a wicket come in the over.


Richardson comes back into the attack and after a dot he gets the wicket of Karthik.

Karthik tries to go after the bowler but only manages to chop it on. 

He is out for 12. 



Siddle brought back into the attack and Karthik starts the over with a single.

Short ball next and Rohit pulls it over mid-wicket for a six, that takes him to 90 off 105.

After a dot, Siddle bowls a slower one, he pulls again, same area, this time for a four. 

Fuller ball and Rohit plays an audacious shot as the ball runs over fine leg for a four.

A dot to end the over as Rohit goes to 98 as 13 come off the over.





Richardson comes back into the attack and has done well to give just 2 in the over.


Behrendorff continues and he gives 8 runs in the over as the batsmen get those runs in singles and twos.

The big runs have dried up after the dismissal of Dhoni as India's requird run rate goes up to 9.


Stoinis continues and India still can't find the big runs as just two come off it.

Behrendorff  continues and just 3 runs come off the over.



Stoinis continues, the batsmen rotate the strike and get 4 in the over.





Dinesh Karthik is the new man in and gets off the mark with a single.

The batsmen take a couple of runs and 4 runs and a wicket comes off the over.


Behrendorff continues and he gets the much-needed breakthrough. Traps Dhoni in front of the stumps for 51.

Stoinis comes back into the attack. and he is welcomed back into the attack with a boundary, that takes him to his fifty -- his 58th in ODIs.

After dot, Dhoni scampers for a single.

After two dots, Rohit ends the over to deep point as six runs come off the over. 






Behrendorff continues and Dhoni gets a single off the last ball, only that one off the over.



Lyon continues and Dhoni gets 3 runs off the first 2 balls. 

After 3 dots, Rohit comes down the track and hammers the ball into the stadium for a huuge six!

Behrendorff comes back into the attack and the well-settled Indian batters take 12 runs off him.

Dhoni is struggling with his fitness here and his running is being hampered. However, India still stay in the chase.

Richarsdson continues and Dhoni starts with a couple. He then takes a single to bring up the 100-run partnership.

Seven runs, including a wide came in that over. 



Lyon comes back and does well to give only 2 in the over.


Richardson brought back into the attack and gives 4 runs in the over.

Maxwell comes into the attack after 2 dots, Dhoni sweeps the ball for a four.

Rohit then gets a boundary through covers. Seven runs come off the over.




Stoinis continues and Dhoni gets a life as he is dropped by a leaping Siddle who can only gets his fingertips to it.

Lyon continues and Rohit has now decided that enough is enough and has decided to take on the bowling.

That is a double-wicket maiden for Richardson.

Rayudu is the new man in and follows his captain back to the crease after being trapped in front of the crease. India take the review but reviews show he is out. 

Rayudu out for a duck and India in trouble at 4 for 3.

Jhye Richardson continues and he has the big wicket of Kohli.

He has started the over by bowling into the batsman and this time Kohli flicks it straight to Stoinis at short square leg. The ball bobbles in Stoinis's hands before he has control of the catch. Kohli can't believe it and he is gonee for 3

Kohli comes in at No 3 and takes strike.

Behrendorff continues over the wicket and Kohli gets off the mark with a push through to covers for a couple. 

Kohli gets a single to  third man after a dot.

Jhye Richardson opens the bowling from the other end and starts with a maiden. 



Australia strike early as Dhawan out for a golden duck.


Left-arm pacer Jason Behrendorff opens the bowling for Australia as Rohit is welcomed with a ball bowled in the channel.

He is keeping the lines tight here. 

Next ball swings in to Rohit, hits on his pads, umpire says not out. Australia take the review.

Pitching outside leg, not out. 

Next ball, Dhawan is gone! Caught right in front of the crease. Inswinger right into Dhawan's pads and he is gone for a duck. India lose first wicket.

Australia notch up 288 in their 50 overs after some late hitting by Stoinis and Maxwell. 


The hosts fought back well after losing captain Finch early with Khawaja, Marsh and Handscomb scoring solid 50s. 

Bhuvneshwar was taken to the cleaners as 93 runs came off the last 10 overs.

He had figures of 2 for 66 in his ten overs, while Kuldeep also picked two wickets and finished with figures of 2 for 54.

A juicy full toss next up and Stoinis slaps it over deep mid-wicket for a six.

He then swings his arms again and luckily falls short of Rohit at deep point.

Maxwell then picks the ball and plays it over mid-wicket for a four.

Maxwell scampers for a couple off the last ball off the over.

 


Shami continues and Stoinis whacks it down the ground, gets a couple as Rayudu misfields at long on.

He then pulls the ball to mid-wicket for a boundary.

He then gets a couple to mid-wicket.

The batsmen had crossed, Stoinis takes a single off the next ball.

Maxwell is the new man in. 

He gets off the mark with a couple, Rohit misfields to allow him the extra run.

Maxwell then takes a single to the off side.

Stoinis ends the over with a single as 11 runs and a wicket come off it.


Bhuvi continues and Handcomb pulls the ball, Rayudu parries the ball over the boundary for a six.

In an effort to up the ante, Handscomb tries to go after the bowling only to be holed out in the deep by Dhawan. 

Handscomb gone for 73 off 61.


Shami brought back into the attack and he starts with a yorker.

He then bowls two wides.

He then bowls a yorker, well dugout by Handscomb for a single.

Stoinis then swings his arms only to get a single to mid-wicket.

Handscomb gets the edge, luckily falls short off the fielder as a single to end the over. 8 comes off it.

Bhuvi comes back into the attack and Stoinis takes a single off the first ball.

Handscomb then plays the ball over covers for a boundary.

A big four to mid-wicket to end the over as 11 come off it.
