His first ball in Tests is right on the mark, just outside the off-stump as Hamza defends and he watchfully defends the rest of the over from the debutant spinner, who starts off with a maiden.

Left-arm spinners from both ends as Jadeja is called into the attack from the other end.

Faf du Plessis drives the second ball through the covers where Umesh half stops it with the dive to keep it down to just one and Hamza again watchfully defends the rest of the over.

It keeps getting dark as the floodlights take full effect at the JSCA international stadium in Ranchi.

Nadeem again bowling in a good channel just outside the off-stump looking for some turn as du Plessis is content to defend. He nearly breaks through with the arm delivery which goes straight through but the South Africa captain manages to block it out for another maiden over.

The umpires check for the light before taking the players off the field because of bad light.

South Africa are reeling on 9/2 in five overs in reply to India's mammoth 497 for nine declared.

Mohammed Shami to open the bowling for India with South Africa having a new opening pair in Dean Elgar and Quinton de Kock.

The first ball rises sharply but goes down the leg side as wicketkeeper Saha is unable to stop it and gives away four byes.

But the next ball, again short, is on the mark as Elgar in caught in two minds whether to leave or defend but the ball takes the glove and the left-hander is caught behind for a duck.

Zubayr Humza is greeted by a quick bouncer which he ducks under and he is then beaten by a sharp incoming delivery before he plays out the last two balls.

Umesh Yadav from the other end. He starts by bowling wide as Quinton de Kock offers no shot to the first four balls before he slaps a wide delivery through the covers for a four to get off the mark.

But Umesh gets revenge the very next delivery with a cracking delivery. A short delivery aimed at the body as de Kock tries to sway out of the way but gets hit on the gloves and is caught behind for four.

South Africa in early trouble on 8/2 in two overs.

Mohammed Shami gets off the mark with a single to long-on and Shahbaz Nadeem sweeps the third ball fine on the leg side for one to get off the mark in Test cricket.

Shami then makes use of the long handle as he smacks Piedt over long-on for a six as India inch closer to 500.

Piedt then bowls one way down the leg side as Shami leaves it alone and wicketkeeper Klaasen is unable to gather it to give away four byes before he takes one to retain strike.

Linde with a chance of picking five wickets on debut. Shami is beaten by one which turns away and gets an edge off the next ball which falls short of the slips.

Shami then gets a huge inside edge which narrowly misses the stumps before the India No 11 takes a quick single into the covers.

Nadeem attempts the slog sweep off the last ball but is beaten.

Pacer Nortje comes back into the attack. Shami picks a single off the second ball before Nadeem ducks under a short ball.

South Africa call for the helmet making their strategy clear of peppering the tailenders with short balls.

But captain Kohli calls his batsmen back into the hut as India declare their first innings on a huge 497 for nine declared in 116.3 overs.

Umesh continues to chance his arm against Linde. He swings Linde over the long-on fence for his third six in a row against the left-arm spinner.

Linde goes short and wide as Umesh is beaten trying to cut before he lofts another full delivery as he just about clears the man at long-off for another six.

Linde gives it more flight but goes wide as Umesh swings and misses.

But the next ball is right in the slot, full and on the stumps, as Umesh blasts it back over the bowler's head for another six, his fifth, as he races to 31 from nine balls -- his highest score in Test cricket.

But Linde gets revenge as Umesh miscues another attempted big hit and is caught on the leg side by wicketkeeper Klaasen after an entertaining 31 from 10 balls.

Ashwin taps Piedt on the leg side for a single to bring Umesh back on strike. Umesh tries to slog sweep the off-spinner but gets an inside edge on to his stumps before he takes one to long-off.

Piedt then bags his first wicket as he beats Ashwin with one that goes straight on, dragging the right-hander out of his crease to have him stumped for 14.

Local boy Shahbaz Nadeem walks out to bat for the first time in Test cricket in front of his home fans and he watchfully blocks the first ball hef faces.

Piedt making a good comeback with the ball, as he bowls another maiden over to Jadeja, his third in a row to improve his bowling figures.

Jadeja has had enough of the defending. This time he slog sweep Linde over midwicket for a four to finally show some positive intent.

Ashwin steers Piedt to thirdman for two runs for the first run the off-spinner has conceded after three maiden overs and then takes one to midwicket.

A single to Jadeja before Ashwin sweeps the last ball fine for a four.

Jadeja cuts Linde past point for a couple and then takes two more runs to complete his half-century from 118 balls.

But Jadeja perishes soon after getting to the landmark as he looks to drive a wide delivery but gets an edge and is caught behind for 51.

Spinner Linde picks up his third wicket of the innings.

Umesh Yadav promoted to No 9 and he comes out all guns blazing. He swings Linde wide of the long-on fence to get off the mark with a six. He then lofts the next ball he faces and clears the man comfortably at long-on for another six.

Off-spinner Piedt, who went for 82 runs in 12 overs, comes back into the attack. He makes a good comeback as he sends down a maiden over to Jadeja.

Ashwin late cuts a wide delivery from Linde towards short thirdman as Jadeja calls him across for a quick single. Jadeja has kept on a leash in the last few overs by the spinners and he decides to release the pressure attempting the slog sweep but is beaten.

He then keeps strike with a single off the last ball.

Piedt sends down another maiden over as Jadeja can only manage a leg bye off the last ball. The left-hander has made just 33 from 100 balls and would be looking to break free and improve his strike rate.

In the next over, Jadeja rocks back and whips Linde to square leg for a single and Ashwin cuts the fourth ball for another run as the fielder at point half stops it.

Linde then strays down the leg side as Jadeja sweeps it fine on the leg side for a four. He gets three runs off the last ball courtesy of an overthrow, which gives him the extra run.

India's batsmen looking in no hurry at the moment. Linde sends down another tidy over as he concedes just a single to Jadeja.

In the next over, Jadeja guides Ngidi past gully for a couple and then survives a confident shout for leg before wicket as he is beaten by a sharp incoming delivery, which is slipping down the leg side.

Another delivery from Ngidi stays low as Jadeja is able to defend it. The pacer then gets one to take off quite sharply but it goes down the leg side and despite wicketkeeper Klaasen getting a hand to it, it goes down for four byes.

Infact, the Hot Spot shows that Jadeja had got some glove on it but the umpire missed it and called it four byes.

In the next over, Saha paddle sweeps Linde fine on the leg side for a four. The bowler gets revenge off the very next delivery as he bowls the right-hander for 24.

Saha plays down the wrong line expecting the ball to turn but it goes straight through the gap between the bat and pad to crash into the stumps.

Ravichandran Ashwin hits the last ball of the over through the coves for two runs to get off the mark.

Ngidi is back into the attack. Saha bats watchfully as he defends the first four balls and then takes a single to fine leg.

Linde has managed to keep things in control in his last few overs with some disciplined bowling. He concedes just a single in his 23rd over as India reach 400 for five in 100 overs.

In the next over, Saha plays a cracking drive through the covers off the front foot for a four as the duo build their sixth wicket partnership to frustrate the South Africans.

Jadeja clips Linde through midwicket for one and Saha glances the next fine for a couple of runs before taking a single.

Jadeja hits the last ball through the covers for three runs as Dean Elgar does well to keep inside the ropes with the slide.

In the next over, Jadeja gets a thick inside edge off Nortje for two runs before he plays out the rest of the over from the fast bowler.

Some extra bounce for Linde as Saha fends it on the off-side and collects a couple of runs. He tries the paddle sweep next ball but can't make proper connection as it goes off the gloves and pads and he takes a quick single.

Jadeja comes forward to defend and is hit on the pads by the sharp turning delivery but he is outside the line and the leg before shout is turned down.

Pacer Anrich Nortje comes in from the other end. The first ball is on the pads as Saha looks to clip it square but misses and collects a leg bye before Jadeja picks a single courtesy of an overthrow.

Saha picks a single on the leg side and Jadeja takes two runs to thirdman.

In the next over, Saha clips Linde to square leg for one and Jadeja drives a full delivery through the covers for two runs.

A good over from Nortje as he bowls a maiden over to Saha as drinks are taken with India on 386 for five in 95 overs.

Jadeja has made 22 from 52 balls, while Saha is on eight.

Saha pushes hard at a wide delivery from Ngidi without any footwork as he gets an edge which goes past the slips for a four.

Saha blocks the next watchfully and offers no shot to the next three balls before he misses the flick last ball.

Jadeja looking in good touch as he slaps a wide delivery from Rabada square on the off-side but can't beat point. He finds the gap a few balls later for a couple of runs.

Spinner George Linde comes back into the attack. Saha gets an inside edge for a single on the leg side before the spinner gets one to turn sharply from the rough into Jadeja, who opts to leave it.

Good bowling from Linde as he pitches on a good line just outside the off-stump to make Jadeja play, who defends watchfully.

Rabada gives South Africa a huge lift with the key wicket of Rohit, who pulls the short ball straight into the hands of the fielder at fine leg.

Rohit walks back after a superb innings of 212, having hit 28 fours and six sixes in his 255-ball knock.

Rabada's extra pace did the trick as Rohit could not get on top of the short ball and ended up pulling it straight to the fine leg fielder. All the South African fielders walk up to congratulate Rohit as he walks back to the dressing room.

The new ball is just 6-7 overs old and South Africa will hope to make it count with a few more wickets and get themselves back in the contest.

Wriddhiman Saha gets off the mark with a single on the leg side and Jadeja plays out the last two balls.

Pacer Lungi Ngidi to start off with the ball in the post-lunch session. Rohit, on 199, looks in no rush to get to his double century as he carefully plays out a maiden over from the fast bowler.

Rohit gets to maiden Test double century in grand style. He pulls the short ball from Ngidi over square leg for a six to complete the double hundred from 249 balls, having hit 28 fours and five sixes.

What a golden run with the bat for Rohit after being promoted to open the innings!

Rohit repeats the shot two balls later as he again pulls Ngidi off the front foot over square leg for another six.

He plays the pull shot again off the last ball for a single to deep midwicket to retain strike.

Anrich Nortje from the other end. Rohit plays away from his body as he edges the first ball past the gully fielder for a four. The next ball is short and wide as Rohit slaps it square for a four to race into the 190s.

He then takes a single to take his score to 196 before Jadeja misses the glance and gets the bye.

Rohit is hit on the pads last ball as he takes the leg bye to retain strike or the final over of the session.

In the next over, Rohit clips Jadeja to square leg and rushes back for the second run to take his score to 198.

Rohit then gets an inside edge which narrowly misses the stumps as he takes one to take his score to 199, with two balls left for lunch.

Jadeja then looking for the single on the off-side gets a thick outside edge past the slips for a four to raise the 50-run stand for the fifth wicket from just 56 balls and leaves the last ball.

India are 357 for four in 85 overs at the lunch break on Day 2.

Rohit is unbeaten on 199 from 242 balls, having hit 28 fours and four sixes, while Jadeja is on 15 from 27 balls.

Rahane was the only wicket to fall in the morning session as he was dismissed by Goerge Linde for a fluent 115, after he had put on 267 runs for the fourth wicket.

India, resuming the second day on 224-3, were once again dominant with the bat as they scored 133 runs from 27 overs, at a healthy run rate of 4.93 in the morning session.

South Africa content with the spinners operating despite the second new ball being available close to the lunch interval. They could have gone for a short quick burst from their pace trio before the lunch break.

Rohit attempts to sweep Piedt but fails to make connect as the South Africans appeal for leg before wicket which is turned down. The visitors decide to review it but the ball has pitched outside the line of leg stump and they end up losing a review.

A single to Jadeja before Rohit flays a full wide delivery from the inconsistent Piedt through the covers for a four to take his score into the 180s.

Another tidy over from Linde as he concedes just two singles.

South Africa have had enough the spinners as they take the second new ball and bring back Rabada.

He starts with a full toss which Rohit gently drives through the covers for a couple. Rabada goes wide as Rohit offers no shot to the next two balls and then nearly chops the fourth ball back on to the stumps.

Rohit then brings out the flowing cover drive but Bavuma puts in the dive to save the boundary and keep it down to just a single.

The last ball is on the pads as Jadeja whips it behind square for a four.

Piedt from round the wicket bowls outside the line of leg stump to Rohit, who ignores the first three balls and then takes a single and Jadeja blocks the last two balls.

Rohit flicks Linde through midwicket for a single and Jadeja clips the next for one to get off the mark.

Linde drops short as Rohit cuts it square on the off-side for a four and then comes down to hit it down to long-on for one and Jadeja drives the last ball to long-on for a single to get eight runs from the over.

Piedt continues as Jadeja picks a single first ball before Rohit smashes a wide half-volley through the covers for a four to take his score to a career-best 178.

A misfield at square gifts Rohit another easy run before Jadeja glances the next to fine leg for a single.

Linde bowls a tidy over, conceding just a single to Jadeja as India reach 323 for four in 80 overs.

South Africa have the second new ball available but they are not taking it straightaway as they continue with the spinners.

Rohit taps Piedt on the off-side for a single before Rahane comes down the track and lofts the spinner back over his head for a four.

Rahane, on 105, again skips down the track and is beaten by one which goes straight on but debutant wicketkeeper Heinrich Klaasen misses an easy stumping.

That wicket would have been a big relief for the Proteas and also for Peidt, who has had a rough time in the series so far.

It is very easy batting for the two Indians batsmen against the spinners as they easily collect three singles from Linde's next over.

Piedt goes wide as Rohit flays it square on the off-side for a four and then takes a single through midwicket.

Rahane continues to give Piedt the charge as he smashes the spinner over midwicket for a four. The next ball is lofted inside out over the covers for another boundary as the two batsmen continue to toy with the spinners.

14 runs from the Piedt over as India go past the 300-run mark, in the 75th over. The off-spinner has once struggled, conceding 69 runs from his nine overs.

Linde makes the breakthrough in the next over with the wicket of Rahane, who is caught behind for 115. The right-hander tries to run it fine on the off-side but the ball bounces quite steeply and takes the edge to be caught behind by Klaasen.

Rahane played a huge role in India's revival in the company of Rohit after a few early wickets as they put on 267 runs for the fourth wicket.

A huge relief for South Africa and delight for Linde as he bags his first wicket in Test.

Ravindra Jadeja walks in at No 6 as Linde gets one to turn sharply into the left-hander, who does well keep it out.

Spin for the first time on Day 2 as left-arm spinner George Linde is called back into the attack. Rohit taps the third ball to mid-on for a single to complete his 150 from 199 balls before Rahane defends the rest of the over.

India are comfortably placed on 274 for three in 70 overs, as they look set for another huge first innings total.

Spin from both ends as Dane Piedt comes into the attack from the other end. Rohit and Rahane pick a single each from the first two balls before the former is beaten by one which goes straight on as he plays for the turn.

Rohit then brings out the reverse sweep against Piedt bowling from round the wicket, steering it fine on the off-side for a four and then punches the last ball through the covers for one.

In the next over, Rohit drives an overpitched wide delivery from Linde through the covers for two runs and then takes one to long-on before Rahane defends the rest of the over.

At the drinks break, India have reached 284 for three in 72 overs, with Rohit on 159 and Rahane on 101.

The duo have so far put on 245 runs from 340 balls for the fourth wicket to put India on top.

The hosts have scored 60 runs from 14 overs bowled in the morning session as South Africa's bowlers struggled to make an impression.

Change at the other end as Nortje comes back to replace Rabada. Rohit takes a quick single off the first ball into the covers. The pacer then bowls a quick short ball which rises steeply as a surprised Rahane fends it on the leg side. Nortje goes short again as Rahane pulls it this time to deep square leg for two runs to inch closer to his century.

In the next over, Rohit continues to keep the runs coming with three boundaries off Ngidi. The pacer drifts on the pads as Rohit glances it fine for a four and then punches the third ball ball through the covers for the same result.

Ngidi goes wide and a little bit short as Rohit has enough time to place it wide of the slips for another four.

Ngidi then drifts on the pads as Rohit clips it to deep square leg for one and Rahane picks a single off the last ball to fine leg.

In the next over, Rahane taps Nortje on the off-side and takes a quick run to complete his century from 169 balls. This is his 11th Test century and his first hundred at home after three years, his last ton at home came against New Zealand in October 2016.

South Africa are losing the plot as the bowlers continue to gift a lot of loose deliveries. A short wide delivery is slashed behind point for a four by Rohit as the runs continue to flow and then pulls the last ball to deep square leg for a single to retain strike.

Lungi Ngidi comes into the attack in place of Nortje. The first ball comes in as Rohit is hit high on the pads and he gets an inside edge off the next before he defends the next.

Ngidi goes short as Rohit pulls it over square leg for a four in some style and then defends the last two balls.

Rahane timing the ball really well. He drives Rabada straight back as the bowler does well to stop it on his follow through before he plays another straight drive two balls later which is stopped by a good dive from Nortje at mid-on.

Rabada bowls a poor delivery, full and down the leg side, as Rohit helps it fine on the leg side for a four.

In the next over, Rahane slaps a short wide delivery from Ngidi behind point for a four to take his score to 96 and also bring up India's 250, in the 66th over.

Rabada keeping it in a good area just outside the off-stump as Rohit is content to bat watchfully as he looks to get his eye in at the start of the day.

Rohit having nothing do with the wide deliveries as he blocks the ones bowled on thes tumps before he drives the last ball, which is pitched right up, straight down the ground past mid-on for his first boundary of the day.

In the next over, Nortje beats Rahane all ends up with a full delivery which moves away sharply after pitching. Rahane was completely opened up as he tried to defend and is lucky that the ball didn't take the edge.

Rahane is then hit on the pads as he tries to flick a full delivery but the leg before shout is turned down as the ball is going down. But the ball tracker shows that the ball might have clipped the leg stump and even if South Africa had reviewed it, they wouldn't have lost their review.

Slightly short from Rabada as Rohit taps it point and takes a quick single and Rahane gets a good stride forward before driving the pacer past mid-off for a four to march into the 90s.

Fast bowler Kagiso Rabada to open the bowling for South Africa on Day 2. The in-form Rohit Sharma is on strike as he defends the first ball watchfully and taps the next on the off-side.

He then offers no shot to the third ball before nudging the next on the leg side and then blocks the last two balls to end the first over of the day.

Pace from both ends as Anrich Nortje bowls from the other end. Ajinkya Rahane defends the first two balls before he plays a beautiful cover drive off the front foot for a boundary to get going in some style. He plays another similar drive off the next ball as Nortje goes wide but this time the cover fielder puts in the dive to save some runs.

Welcome to the coverage of Day 2 of the third and final Test between India and South Africa in Ranchi on Sunday.

India will be aiming to continue their good showing with the bat and post a big first innings total. For South Africa, the key will be picking up a few early wickets and keep India's total under check.

At stumps on Day 1, India are well placed on 224 for three in 58 overs as nearly 32 overs were lost due to bad light and rain.

Rohit hit a magnificent 117 from 164 balls, hitting 14 fours and a six, while Rahane stroked a fluent 83 from 135 balls, laced with 11 fours and a six, as the duo were involved in an unbroken stand of 185 runs for the fourth wicket.

India lost opener Mayank Agarwal (10), Cheteshwar Pujara (0) and skipper Virat Kohli (12) in the morning session after electing to bat, with Kagiso Rabada taking two early wickets.
