IPL updates: Dhawan stars in DC's win against Punjab

Delhi Capitals openers Prithvi Shaw and Shikhar Dhawan scored at a brisk rate at the start of the innings to give a good start in their pursuit of the 196-run target. Both Shaw and Dhawan belted the Punjab Kings bowlers to all parts of the ground. Shaw , however departed on 32 while Dhawan played a brilliant innings (92 off 49) but missed out on his century.

In the end Delhi Capitals won with nine balls to spare.

Mayank Agarwal and birthday boy KL Rahul put up a hundred run-stand and got the team off to a remarkable start. Captain Rahul made a well-calculated 61 runs off 51 balls while Agarwal also scored a fifty (69 runs off 36 balls). 

At one stage, PBKS looked set to scale the 200-run barrier but DC bowlers came back well to put brakes on the scoring. 

Delhi Capital openers Prithvi Shaw and Shikhar Dhawan will need to get going from the start itself to put their team in control of the 196 target.

Left-arm seamer Meriwala comes from the other end. Rahul powers it through the covers for four runs. Rahul dropped by Smith at point. It was a touch chance though. Misfield at cover and boundary for Agarwal. No ball called for overstepping. The free hit is hammered straight for six runs! He sends the next back to the bowler. 19:24   IPL updates: RCB down KKR; Delhi opt to bowl vs Punjab

In the second match of the day, Delhi Capitals skipper Rishabh Pant has won the toss and elected to bowl against Punjab Kings, at the Wankhede stadium in Mumbai, on Monday.

Steven Smith plays his first match of IPL 2021 as he makes his debut for Delhi Capitals along with left-arm seamer Lukman Meriwala.

Punjab have made one change as spin all-rounder Jalaj Saxena comes in for M Ashwin.

Siraj to bowl the 19th over with KKR needing a boundary off every ball.

The first ball is full as Russell hits it to thirdman but turns down the single before the next ball is jammed out on the off-side for another dot ball.

Siraj getting his yorkers bang on target as Russell can steer it to thirdman before the next ball is defended on the off-side.

Russell then offers no shot to the slower bouncer before keeping strike with one from the last ball.

Harshal to bowl the final over. Russell has a big swing off the first ball but gets an inside edge to be bowled for 31 from 20 balls.

New batsman Varun Chakravarthy can only keep out a yorker before he takes a single from the next ball and Harbhajan Singh can only manage one off the next.

Another dominating performance by RCB with both bat and ball as they outclass KKR by 38 runs.

This is a dream start by RCB as they win the first three games in the IPL for the first time in their history.

Is there a way back for KKR? They need 59 from the last three overs for victory.

Russell getting back to his destructive form with the bat. He swings Jamieson over midwicket for a six to continue to lift KKR's hopes.

Jamieson goes for the slower bouncer which bounces high as Russell misses the slash but it is ruled a wide.

Russell then misses the swing off a length ball as he gets one before Jamieson strikes with the wicket of Shakib.

The left-hander walks across a long way looking for the paddle but misses and is bowled for 26.

Pat Cummins takes no time to get going. He smashes Jamieson straight down the ground over long-on for a six off the first ball he faces to get going in smashing fashion.

However, Jamieson gets revenge off the next ball as Cummins throws his bat at a wide one but gets the edge and is caught behind.

The impressive Harshal keeps things tight from his end. The pace bowler uses the change of pace to good effect to keep the two batsmen guessing and not let them try any pre-meditated shots.

Russell looks to smash the first ball but gets an inside edge on to his pads before he pulls the next for a single.

A single to Shakib down to long-on and Russell tries another big swing but can only hit it down the ground for one.

Another run to Shakib before Russell hits a full toss on the bounce to deep midwicket for just one, as Harshal concedes just five in his third over.

Leg-spinner Chahal is back into the attack. Russell pulls the first ball over midwicket for a six before he slog sweeps the next for a boundary.

Chahal goes wide but has dropped short as Russell cuts it past point for a four.

Another half-tracker from the leggie as Russell smashes it through the covers for the third four in a row.

KKR 121-5 (15 ovs) vs  RCB 204-4

Morgan gets a lifeline as he looks to swing Patel over the leg side but gets a thick outside edge which falls safely between point and short thirdman. Infact, Siraj at point looked all set to take the catch before he bails out of the catch at the very last minute.

However, the pacer gets his man after a few balls.

This time Morgan is caught in the covers by his opposite number Kohli for 29 as he tries to hit it over the off-side.

The match looks beyond even with Andre Russell out in the middle, with 90 needed from six overs for victory.

Kyle Jamieson is back into the attack. Shakib lofts the first ball over the off-side for a single before Russell taps the next to point and then takes a single to get off the mark.

Shakib then walks across his stumps before he paddles the slower bouncer over the wicketkeeper for a four.

He tries to repeat the shot but this time Jamieson beats him with a full delivery which goes past the edge as he concedes just six runs from the over.

RCB look on course for an easy victory, with KKR need 84 from five overs for victory.

Part-time off-spinner Glenn Maxwell comes into the attack. A single each to Morgan and Shakib off the first two balls before the KKR captain lofts the spinner over long-on for a six.

He tries to reverse sweep the next ball but is beaten, followed by singles off the last two balls, as 10 come from the 11th over.

Medium pacer Harshal Patel comes into the attack. He sends down a tidy over, giving away just five singles in his first over as the asking rate keeps creeping up.

Shakib targets Maxwell as he lofts the spinner straight down the ground for a six over long-off.

He hits the next ball over the bowler's head for a single before Morgan swings the fourth over midwicket for the second six of the over.

18:25   Karthik out for 2; KKR in trouble

KKR 83-4 (10 ovs) vs  RCB 204-4

Things going from bad to worse for KKR.

Chahal strikes with the wicket of the experienced Karthik, who is trapped leg before wicket for two. The right-hander is done in completely by the googly as he plays for the turn to be trapped leg before wicket and he walks away without taking the review.

The next ball is again a superb delivery as the googly beats left-hander Shakib Al Hasan before he lofts the next over the bowler for a single to get off the mark.

Morgan watchfully blocks out the last ball as Chahal concedes just two runs in the ninth over, for wonderful figures of 2/14 in three overs.

Shakib comes down the track and drives Sundar down to long-off for a single.

Morgan tries to reverse sweep Sundar but miscues it over the wicketkeeper for a four, followed by singles off the last three balls.

At the halfway stage, KKR are reeling on 83/4 in 10 overs, needing another 122 from 10 overs for victory at an asking rate of above 12.

Chahal comes back into the attack. Eoin Morgan sweeps the first ball for a single before Rana steers a wide delivery past the slip fielder for a four.

Two balls later, the left-hander scoops it over the wicketkeeper for another four as KKR look to stay in touch with the asking rate.

Spin introduced as leggie Yuzvendra Chahal comes into the attack. Rana taps the first ball on the leg side for a single before Tripathi chips down the track but gets an inside edge on to his pads.

He looks to sweep the next ball but is hit on the pads and defends the next before taking a single.

Rana defends the last ball off the frontfoot as Chahal concedes just two runs in his first over.

Off-spinner Washington Sundar comes into the attack. Tripathi smashes the first ball straight down the ground for a four before he takes a risky single from the third ball.

Rana gets the fourth ball through the leg side for one and Tripathi picks one off the last ball, to get seven from the over.
17:40   Gill out for 21; KKR lose early wicket

KKR 27-1 (2 ovs) vs  RCB 204-4

Mohammed Siraj to open the bowling for RCB, while Shubman Gill and Nitish Rana are the two openers for KKR, who need to make most of the Powerplay and give their team a flying start.

Rana is beaten first ball as he throws his bat at a wide delivery before taking a single off the next to get off the mark.

Siraj bowls a wide down the leg side to Gill, who punches the third ball in the gap through the covers for a four to get off the mark in some style.

Gill defends the next two balls before he flicks the last ball to mid-on and steals a quick run.

Kyle Jamieson into the attack from the other end. Gill chips down the track to the first ball and hits it through the covers for a four.

Two balls later, he pulls a short ball over midwicket for a six, hitting it flat over the leg side.

He makes room and slashes the next ball square on the off-side for anotehr six as  KKR are off to a flier.

However, Jamieson gets revenge as Gill looks to loft the fifth ball but fails to get hold of it and substitute Dan Christian takes a superb diving catch.

Gill's entertaining innings cut short as he walks back for 21 from nine balls.

New batsman Rahul Tripathi wastes no time in getting going. He smashes the first ball he faces through the off-side for a four.

17:15   De Villiers's 34-ball 76 lifts RCB to 204

RCB 204-4 (20 ovs) vs KKR

Russell to bowl the final over. The first ball is pitched up as de Villiers hits it back over the bowler's head for a boundary.

The next ball is a full toss as de Villiers sweeps it over square leg for a six before he hits the next into the covers for two runs.

An under-pressure Russell bowls a wide before de Villiers carves a short wide delivery over short thirdman for a four, to bring up RCB's 200.

A good yorker from Russell as de Villiers can only dig it back to the bowler for a rare dot ball.

The last ball is blasted straight down the ground for a four as RCB finish on a huge 204/4 in their 20 overs, with Russell conceding 21 from the final over.

Sensational batting from de Villiers in the final few overs as he smashes his way to 76 not out from just 34 balls, hitting nine fours and three sixes, to turn the RCB on it's head.

What a turnaround from RCB in the final few overs, as they smashed 70 from the last five overs, with de Villiers hitting 55 of them.

RCB 183-4 (19 ovs) vs KKR

KKR's death overs specialist Andre Russell comes into the attack, to bowl the 18th over.

He starts with a wide yorker which de Villiers misses before the medium pacer bowls a wide.

Russell makes the mistake of bowling length to de Villiers, who clubs it over midwicket for a six.

Russell from round the wicket provides some width as de Villiers flays it past point for a four and hits the next through the covers for a couple.

De Villiers taking the KKR attack to the cleaners. This time a high full toss is steered wide of the wicketkeeper, fine on the off-side for a four.

De Villiers is proving to be unstoppable as he keeps the boundaries coming in the final overs, with 48 coming from the last four overs.

Harbhajan is back into the attack, to bowl the 19th over. The first ball is is flighted and turns sharply as Kyle Jamieson has a swing but misses.

He then hits the next ball through the covers for a four to get off the mark.

Generous flight from Harbhajan but Jamieson uses his power to good effect, hitting it straight down the ground to clear Cummins at long-off for a six.

Jamieson takes a single before de Villiers makes room and swats the off-spinner inside out over the cover fence for a six, to race to his fifty from just 27 balls.

De Villiers retains the strike with a single from the last ball, as Harbhajan goes for 18 in his final over.

RCB 148-4 (17 ovs) vs KKR

Krishna is back into the attack. De Villiers gets the first ball to fine leg for a single and Maxwell swings the next to deep midwicket for another run.

The next ball is hit back to the bowler before de Villiers crashes the fourth ball through the covers for a four.

It is attack from both ends now!

This time de Villiers pulls a short ball from Krishna over midwicket for another boundary.

A single from the last ball raises the 50-run stand for the fourth wicket from just 29 balls as RCB look set for a total around the 180-run mark.

Cummins, who has one over in hand, is back into the attack. De Villiers picks a single from the first ball before Maxwell makes room and tries to scoop it over wicket but fails to make connection.

He makes room and smashes the third ball wide of long-off for just a single.

A single each to Maxwell and de Villiers before the former makes room and tries to blast it over the off-side but is beaten.

Cummins gets his man off the last ball as he top edges the pull shot and is caught at short fine leg.

Maxwell walks back after a superb innings of 78 from 49 balls, having hit nine fours and three sixes, for his third fifty in a row.

RCB 134-3 (15 ovs) vs KKR

Chakravarthy comes back into the attack. De Villiers and Maxwell do well to pick five singles from the spinner's third over, not wanting to take any risks at this stage.

Cummins, who has two overs in hand, is back into the attack. De Villiers steers the first ball to thirdman for two runs before he picks a single off the next.

Another single to Maxwell to deep square leg and de Villiers hits the fifth ball for one to mid-off.

Cummins then bowls two wides in succession, trying to keep it out of reach of Maxwell.

The last ball is sliced over thirdman for a four as Maxwell keeps the runs coming for RCB.

Chakravarthy gets de Villiers to edge one as he looks to drive but it goes fine on the off-side for a four.

De Villiers then comes down and lofts the next down the ground, beating the fielder at long-off for another boundary before he takes a single.

Maxwell pulls a short ball from the leg-spinner for two runs to deep midwicket.

He plays a sensational switch hit off the last ball, smashing it over the covers for a six.

17 runs from the over as Chakravarthy finishes with 2/39 in four overs.

RCB look set for a huge score as they reach 134/3 in 15 overs, with Maxwell stroking 76 from 44 balls and de Villiers on 21 from 13 balls.

RCB 101-3 (12 ovs) vs KKR

Harbhajan comes back into the attack. Padikkal reverse sweeps the second ball square on the off-side for a four before taking a single.

Maxwell then lofts Harbhajan over the off-side for a four before he tries the reverse sweep which he mishits for a single.

Padikkal hits the last ball over the bowler's head for one as 11 runs come from the 11th over.

Prasidh Krishna makes the breakthrough with the wicket of Padikkal. The left-hander, who made 25 from 28 balls, pulls the short ball straight into the hands of Tripathi at deep midwicket.

Maxwell is beaten next ball as he plays away from his body before he defends the next back to the bowler and then takes a single.

AB de Villiers cuts the fifth ball past point for two runs to get off the mark and hits the last ball through the covers for three runs, as RCB go past 100, in the 12th over.

RCB 84-2 (10 ovs) vs KKR

Cummins comes back into the attack. Maxwell steers the first ball square on the off-side for a single and Padikkal clips the next ball on the leg side for two runs, followed by a single.

Maxwell then smashes a short delivery over the covers for a four before pulling the next ball for a couple.

He takes a single from the last ball to race to his fifty from 28 balls, with Cummins going for 11 runs in the over.

Krishna comes back into the attack. Maxwell hits the first ball down to long-on for a single and Padikkal clips the third ball to square leg for one.

Maxwell slashes the fifth ball square on the off-side for a four as RCB recover to 84/2 in 10 overs.

Maxwell has smashed his way to 55 from 32 balls, while Padikkal has hit from 19 from 23 balls.
16:11   Maxwell's attack puts RCB back on track

RCB 67-2 (8 ovs) vs KKR

Pace bowler Prasidh Krishna comes into the attack. Maxwell defends the first ball and then takes a single off the next before Padikkal picks one off the second ball.

Krishna has overstepped to gift RCB and Maxwell a free hit. The Australian blasts the free hit delivery square on the off-side for a four to take RCB past the 50-run mark, in the seventh over.

Maxwell misses the clip off the next ball and is hit on the pads before the next ball which comes in sharply hits him on the pads.

He keeps strike with a single off the last ball to sweeper cover.

Chakravarthy, who took two wickets in his first over, is back into the attack.

He starts with no-ball as KKR's bowlers continue to overstep. The free hit delivery is slightly short as Maxwell pulls it over midwicket for a six.

Maxwell clips the next ball through square leg for a four and then takes a single off the next.

RCB 45-2 (6 ovs) vs KKR

Pace bowler Pat Cummins comes into the attack in place of Harbhajan, who bowled two overs for nine runs in his first spell.

Maxwell goes hard at the second ball but gets a thick inside edge which goes past short fine leg for a four.

A single to Maxwell before Padikkal steers the fourth ball past point for two runs before pulling the last ball for another couple of runs.

Shakib continues as Maxwell swings the first ball across the line over midwicket for a six and hits the next ball to the same fielder for one.

Poor bowling from Shakib as he drops short and Padikkal rocks back and cuts it square on the off-side for a four and then takes a single.

Maxwell on the attack as he reverse sweeps Shakib over the off-side for another four before keeping strike with one from the last ball.

Harbhajan continues as Padikkal defends the first ball before he tries to cut the next ball but is beaten.

The in-form Glenn Maxwell drives the last ball down to long-on for a single to get off the mark.

Chakravrathy taken off the attack despite taking two wickets in his first over as Shakib Al Hasan comes into the attack.

Maxwell makes room and looks to hit the second ball through the off-side but gets an inside edge before he hits the third into the covers.

Maxwell slaps the fourth ball down to long-off for a single and Padikkal clips the next to midwicket for one.

Maxwell hits the last ball down to long-off for another single as RCB reach 19/2 in four overs.
15:40   RCB in trouble after early wickets vs KKR

RCB 9-2 (2 ovs) vs KKR

Veteran Harbhajan Singh to open the bowling for KKR, while Virat Kohli and Devdutt Padikkal are the two openers for RCB.

The first ball is tapped back to the bowler by Kohli, who also defends the next ball. However, Harbhajan has overstepped to concede a no-ball but Kohli is unable to make most of the free hit.

He comes down the track but is beaten by the full delivery which takes the edge and goes through wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik's legs for a four.

Kohli taps the next ball on the leg side for a single and Padikkal is hit on the pads next ball but the leg before shout is turned down.

Left-hander Padikkal pushes the fifth ball into the covers before he defends the last ball straight.

Spin from both ends as Varun Chakravarthy comes in from the other end. He strikes with the big wicket of Kohli (5) with the second ball, with Rahul Tripathi taking a superb catch running back from point.

Kohli looks to slice Chakravarthy over the off-side but only manages to miscue it on the off-side with RCB losing an early wicket.

Rajat Tripathi comes in at No 3 but he doesn't last long.

Chakravarthy strikes again with the last ball of the over with the wicket of Patidar, who is bowled off his pads for one.

RCB in early trouble on 9/2 in two overs.

Welcome to the coverage of the Indian Premier League match between Royal Challengers Bangalore and Kolkata Knight Riders in Chennai on Sunday.

Boasting a famed batting line-up in Kohli, AB de Villiers, Glenn Maxwell and the talented youngster Devdutt Padikkal, RCB are yet to perform to their full potential.

But it did not matter much as RCB have won both their matches with new signing Maxwell holding fort in the middle and the likes of Shahbaz Ahmed and Harshal Patel making the difference in bowling.
