England 159-8 (59 ovs) vs India | Scorecard

Shami has been given a break as Siraj comes back from the other end. Root taps the first ball for a single to point and Sam Curran picks a quick run off the next to get off the mark.

A quick bouncer from Siraj as Root avoids and wicketkeeper Pant does well to collect it overhead.

The last ball is again short and this time Root pulls it behind square for a four as England go past the 150-run mark.

In the next over, Curran gets a thick outside edge off Bumrah for a four past the slip fielders.

A full delivery from Bumrah as Curran watchfully pushes it on the off-side, covering nicely for the late swing.

The next ball is a bit shorter in length as Curran looks to defend, playing away from his body and is beaten before he is struck on the pads by the incoming delivery.

Shardul comes back into the attack. He strikes with the big wicket of Root, who is trapped leg before wicket after scoring 64.

The full delivery accounted for Root, who was looking to flick it across the line but it moved away late to strike the pads plumb in front and he walks off without taking the review.

England lose their third wicket of the session to be reduced to 155/7.

Three balls later, Shardul strikes again as Ollie Robinson offer a simple catch to Shami at mid-on to perish for a duck.

Stuart Broad gives the home crowd something to cheer for as he drives the first ball he faces through the covers for a four to get off the mark in style.
