Shami tries the inswinger but it strays down the leg side as Root is unable to flick it.

The next ball moves away as Root pushes away from the body but with soft hands as he gets a thick outside edge which goes on the bounce to the fielder at second slip.

Shami gets the fifth ball to move in sharply as Root is caught by surprise and has to fend it on the leg side.

The last ball is short as Root swivels and pulls it to fine leg for a single.

Change in the bowling as Siraj replaces Bumrah. The first ball is left alone by Root before he blocks the next on the off-side followed by another leave.

He blocks the next two deliveries on the off-side before Root plays another cracking drive through the covers for a four to take his score to 23.

Shami bowling a good spell on the opening day. He has made the batsmen play a lot while getting the ball to move both ways. Bairstow is struck on the pads off an inside edge as he tries to flick before a fumble off his bowling by Shami gifts England a single.

Siraj follows it up with a tidy over, bowling in a good channel to Bairstow, who plays out a maiden over.

Shardul comes back into the attack as he replaces Shami. Root leaves the first ball before he pushes the next on the off-side and then offers no shot to the third.

Root then pushes forward as he gets a thick outside edge which falls well short of the gully fielder and he plays out the last two balls for the second maiden over in a row.
