South Africa beat India by 31 runs to win the 1st ODI in Paarl to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.
In a match that ebbed and flowed beautifully, South Africa bowlers eventually found their mojo to keep India in check and wrest control of the match before winning it by 31 runs.
Chasing 297 for victory, India got off to a brisk start before Markram took out Rahul for 12.
Kohli and Dhawan then put on a 92-run stand to keep India in the hunt but just went it looked like the visitors were running away with the game, South Africa's bowlers ripped into India's fragile middle-order.
After Dhawan and Kohli were dismissed, none of the other batsmen stood their ground and put on a fight and India went from 138 for 2 to 188 for 6. Ashwin, Bhuvi couldn't do much but a 50-run partnership between Thakur and Bumrah frustrated the South Africans but it was too little too late as India fell short by 31 runs.

De Kock then tries to scoop it over the stumps but hits it into his stonach and runs a tight single as Bavuma loses his bat while taking the single.

Bhuvi continues and he starts with inswingers that Bavuma can only defend.
Bavuma then goes for the big hoick but he can only manage to mishit it to mid-wicket for a couple.
He then turns one to third man for a single.
Bhuvi gets a warning before de Kock plays it straight to mid-on for a quick single.
Bavuma then blocks the ball back to bowler. 4 come off the over.
Thakur in the attack now, he starts with a widish ball but it has no pace and bounce and Bavuma gets an inside edge just past the stumps for a single to fine leg.
Next ball is wide down the leg side as India fielders go up for the caught behind. That was a front foot no ball and the free-hit next ball is a full toss that de Kock plays straight to mid-on. Wasted chance that.
A dot later, de Kock comes down the track and plays the ball straight down the ground for a single.
Bavuma then clips the ball behind square for a single.
De Kock is then hit on the back pad, Thakur's lone appeal for LBW is turned down by umpire Palekar.

Bhuvi then bowls straight and de Kock plays it straight back past the bowler for a couple as 5 come off it.
Bumrah continues and de Kock starts the over with a single to the leg side.
After a dot, Bavuma defends the ball nicely back to tbe bowler.
And Bavuma gets one slightly short and Bavuma defends but the ball bounces back and just misses hitting his stumps.
Bavuma plays another dot before flicking one to mid-wicket to end the over with a single.

Bhuvi continues and after a dot, he gets one to seam away that goes past de Kock's outside edge.
He then bowls straightish and de Kock clips it down to fine leg for a single.
Bhuvi then gets bowls full and he gets to nip one into the right-handed Bavuma who gets an inside edge onto his pads.
A dot later, Bavuma gets the outside edge, Pant may have not got to it. The soft signal is not out as the third umpire is called in. The replays show that the ball has bounced into Pant's gloves. And Bavuma survives.

Bavuma is the new man in and Bumrah is getting some movement and the batsman gets the edge off the outswinger, lucky it didn't find the fielder.
Bumrah gets one to the leg side and he hits Bavuma on the pads.
A dot later, Bavuma ends the over with a glorious drive through extra cover to get off the mark with a four.
Bumrah continues and the ball keeps low as it travels to Pant past the off stump.
Bumrah then gets one to swing out, Malan fishes at it, gets a faint nick and is caught behind for 6. Bumrah strikes and South Africa lose early wicket.
Bhuvi continues and Malan punches it to backward point and the ball goes between the fielder's legs for a for a four.
Three dots later, Malan takes a single to third man.
De Kock punches the ball to mid-off for a dot. 5 come off the over.
Bumrah continues and he gets some movement into the right-handed Malan who plays the ball back nicely.
Malan then plays the ball down to third man for a single to get off the man.
Bunrah then gets one to swing to the off side, de Kock is happy to let it go.
Bumrah then gets one full and wide and de Kock times it crisply through square on the off side for a four.

Bhuvi opens from the other end and he starts with one nipping back and de Kock plays it with soft hands to the off side for a couple.
Bhuvi then gets some seam movement and beats de Kock's bat outside the off stump.
A dot later, Bhuvi bowls one wide off the leg stump. Wide called by umpire Erasmus officiating his 100th ODI.
Bhuvi then hits de Kock on the back leg, big shout for LBW but the umpire is not interested and appeal quickly dies down as the ball pitched outside leg.
Two dots to end the over and both India opening bowlers have started well.
Quinton de Kock and Janneman Malan to open the batting for South Africa while Jasprit Bumrah opens the bowling for India and he starts with an inswinger that de Kock plays back to the bowler.
Another delivery at the pads of de Kock and Bumrah then bowls one down the leg side, it swung and Pant did well to put in the dive and save a boundary. Wide called.
Bumrah again bowls one down the leg side and de Kock gets a pad to it ad the ball runs past a diving Pant for a boundary.

South Africa captain Temba Bavuma has won the toss and elected to bat in the 1st ODI against India at Boland Park in Paarl on Wednesday.
Bavuma is looking to win the first ODI to climb up the World Series to qualify for the 2023 World Cup in India.
Rahul says India would have batted first too but hopes that Bumrah takes early wickets before the spinners will test the batters in the middle overs.
Vekatesh Iyer makes his ODI debut while Bhuvneshwar Kumar returns. Shreyas to bat at No 4, reveals Rahul at the toss.

Welcome to the commentary of the 1st of the three-match ODI series between South Africa and India, played in Paarl on Wednesday.
The mighty Virat Kohli's presence in the Indian playing eleven as a mere player for the first time in seven years will be keenly followed while K L Rahul, his potential successor in red-ball cricket, will be judged for his captaincy in the three-match ODI series against South Africa, beginning in Paarl, on Wednesday.
His supporters, and Indian cricket in general, will be hoping that Kohli has put his differences with the BCCI firmly behind him and, come Wednesday, starts a new innings with his willow doing most of the talking. A highly desired century after two years will be the cherry on top.
Rahul, leading the side in the absence of an injured Rohit Sharma, is expected to turn to Kohli for advice during the series. Not only Kohli has a major role to play as a batter, but as vice-captain Jasprit Bumrah said on the eve of the series, the star "will always be a leader" in the team.
With the new leadership and support staff, India will look to win the series, with one eye on preparations for the 2023 World Cup and also make up for the disappointment of unexpectedly going down in the Tests last week.
The last time a full strength India played an ODI series was at home, against England in March, before a second string squad travelled to Sri Lanka in July.
Rahul will open the batting with veteran Shikhar Dhawan, who has thrived under pressure in the past and will be looking to solidify his position as the first-choice opener alongside Rohit when the latter returns from injury.
Kohli will bat at his usual number three spot while there will be a toss-up between Suryakumar Yadav and Shreyas Iyer for the number four position.
Rishabh Pant is expected to come at number five while Venkatesh Iyer is likely to make his 50-over debut as the all-rounder at six, having shown promise in the T20s against New Zealand.
The two spinners likely to play are Yuzvendra Chahal and Ravichandran Ashwin, who has made a comeback after more than four years.
South Africa will be in high spirits after a memorable victory in the five-day format.
Skipper Temba Bavuma played a few crucial knocks in the preceding Tests and he will carry that confidence into his batting as well as his leadership.
Quinton de Kock, who retired from Test cricket after the series opener against India, starts life as a white-ball only player.
Tall left-arm pacer Marco Jansen, who excelled in his maiden Test series, is expected to trouble the Indian batters with his extra bounce and variations in the short format after earning a maiden call-up.
If the Tests were any indication, the ODIs will be an intensely-fought affair.
