Anderson starts his second over with the wide outswinger which Gill leaves but the next one is on the stumps with the India opener blocking it.

Gill makes the mistake of pushing away from his body as he gets the edge but the ball falls just short of second slip.

The next ball again moves away but it stays low and bounces before reaching the wicketkeeper.

The fourth ball is down the leg side as Gill misses the glance but the ball goes fine off the pads for a couple of leg byes.

Pujara gets off the mark in confident fashion. The full delivery from Broad is driven straight down the ground through the vacant mid-off region for a four.

The next ball comes in as Pujara misses the fine tickle but picks up a couple of leg byes as the ball goes fine off the pads.

He defends the next ball with caution and leaves the last ball.

Gill happy to play positively. This time the wide half-volley from Anderson is crashed through the vacant mid-off region for a boundary.

However, he gets carried away as he pushes away at the wide outswinger next ball without any footwork and is beaten.

Gill taps the fifth ball into the off-side and rushes across for a quick single before Pujara is beaten all ends up next ball, courtesy of some extra bounce and swing from Anderson.

India are 18 for no loss in five overs.
15:10   England opt to bowl; Ashwin left out

India 5-0 (2 ovs) vs England | Scorecard

Shubman Gill walks out to open with Cheteshwar Pujara, while veteran James Anderson opens the bowling for England.

The first ball is full and swings away as Gill is able to leave it easily and he does the same next ball.

Anderson focussing on keeping it full and just outside the off-stump as Gill is happy to offer no stroke as he looks to get his eye in.

After four wide outswingers, Anderson gets one to jag in as Gill is struck on high on the pads trying to defend.

The last ball comes in again and this time Gill flicks it through midwicket for a four to get off the mark.

Stuart Broad from the other end. The first ball is wide of the stumps as Pujara offers no stroke but Broad has overstepped to concede a no-ball.

Even Broad happy to pitch it wide of the stumps and someone like Pujara will be happy, leaving as many deliveries as possible against the new ball.

After a few outswingers, Broad pitches the last ball on the stumps as Pujara watchfully blocks it on the leg side.
14:57   England opt to bowl; Ashwin left out

India have never won a Test match at Edgbaston in Birmingham. Out of six Tests played against England at this venue, India have lost six, while one ended in a draw.

Interestingly, India suffered innings defeats in three out of the six Tests.

In their last Test at this venue in 2018, India suffered a narrow 31-run defeat after they failed to chase down 194 in the fourth innings.

14:18   5th Test Updates: Bumrah leads as India eye series win

Welcome to the coverage of the rescheduled fifth and final Test between England and India in Birmingham on Friday.

Pacer Jasprit Bumrah will lead India after regular captain Rohit Sharma was ruled out of the match with COVID-19.

India were 2-1 ahead in the series last September when the final test at Old Trafford was cancelled due to COVID-19 cases in their camp. The fifth Test will be played in Edgbaston from Friday.

Nine months have passed since that uncompleted series with a lot of changes in both side, with Virat Kohli relinquishing Test captaincy while Ben Stokes has taken over the England leadership role in place of Joe Root.

The 3-0 demolition of New Zealand with three tricky chases completed in style has shown that England, under new coach Brendon McCullum, have emerged as a force.

India will have to bat well and in absence of regular opening pair of Rohit and Rahul, who were fantastic during the four Tests played last year.

Coach Rahul Dravid expects a match-winning performance if not a hundred from Virat Kohli, who looked good in the practice game but the Test match will be a different beast altogether.

James Anderson might be a month short of his 40th birthday but those magical wrists can still make the ball dart around and it will be a different experience for Shubman Gill or Shreyas Iyer.

Cheteshwar Pujara has scored a bagful of county runs but that psychological disadvantage of facing the very first ball of an innings, if he is asked to open, could clutter his mind.

Hanuma Vihari is a solid player but would need support from the other end, considering he has a defensive game.

It remains to be seen who will be India's bowling all-rounder. Will it be Ravichandran Ashwin, who isn't an automatic choice in overseas conditions or Shardul Thakur, who hasn't done his chances any harm with some big-hearted efforts.

Edgbaston hasn't exactly been a happy hunting ground for India where they have lost most of their Test matches but as it often happens with new beginnings, a new captain can always try to buck the trend.
