The next ball is again overpitched as Head comes up with another cracking shot, -- a beautiful on-drive through the vacant mid-on region for a four.

He taps the third ball on the leg side for one before Smith misses out on the glance off a full delivery on the pads and Bharat comes up with a diving stop to save some runs.

Shami to bowl the final over of the day. Head punches the first ball in the gap through the covers and the two batters still have enough energy to push for three.

Smith ends the day in grand style as he plays a delightful drive through the covers for a four.

Australia dominated the opening day to finish on a strong 327/3 in 85 overs at stumps.

Head came out attacking to rally Australia after a difficult start as he smashed 146 not out from 156 balls, with 22 fours and a six. Smith continued his good record at The Oval with a solid knock of 95 from 227 balls.

The duo put on an unbroken stand of 251 runs from 370 balls to give Australia the upper hand.

They took apart the Indian bowlers in the final session, scoring 157 runs in 34 runs at a run rate of 4.61 to put their team in complete control.
