England humiliate India to win 2nd Test, level series

Timeline  Refresh

11:15
This is only the second time in 22 matches that India have lost a Test match at home under Mahendra Singh Dhoni as captain. The only other defeat was against South Africa in 2010.

"Monty was the major difference - he had exactly the right pace for the wicket," says Dhoni after the defeat.

Kevin Pietersen is the man of the match for his match-winning knock of 186 from 233 balls that made the difference on a wicket where batsmen from both teams struggled.

ENGLAND WIN 2ND TEST BY 10 WICKETS!!!!

Compton finished unbeaten on 30 from 28 balls, while Cook was not out on 18 as England cruised to 58 for no loss in 9.4 overs, in the first session on Day 4.

Once again the Indian spinners failed to make any sort of impression as they were negotiated quite easily by the England openers.

England, if you remember, had lost the toss and had to bowl first on a pitch offering a lot of help to the spinners.

This is England's first Test win in India since 2006 and interestingly that win also came at the Wankhede stadium when they registered a 212-run victory.

The four-match series is now level at 1-1 giving England a chance to win their first series win in India in 27 years. Their last series win in India came way back in 1984-85.

ENGLAND WIN 2ND TEST BY 10 WICKETS!!!!

Harbhajan Singh comes into the attack, to bowl the 8th over of the innings. Cook drills the first ball back past the bowler for three runs before Compton gets one to long-on. 43-0 (7 overs)

Cook continues his positive approach against the Indian spinners, playing the sweep as much as possible, trying to disrupt their rhythm.

Five singles from Harbhajan's second over as England reach 50 for no loss after nine overs.

Compton crashes Ashwin through the covers for a four to take England close to victory, with just three needed for a win now.

The last ball is down the leg side which Dhoni fails to collect and it goes for four byes to give England a convincing victory.

England 2nd inns: 38-0 (6 ovs); Target: 57

And as expected, Dhoni has gone on the defensive with fielders at long-off, deep midwicket and deep square leg. Someone needs to tell him that India is defending a target of just 57 and not 570, England won't mind the singles at all.

Two singles from the first two balls of Ojha's second over before Cook picks two runs from the last ball.

With the field spread out, England pick another three singles from three balls from Ashwin's next over before Cook cuts a short ball for three runs to the point region.

Compton then lofts Ojha back over his head for a six as England race to 38 for no loss in six overs.

India's spinners continue to disappoint in the second innings too. Compton flicks a full toss past midwicket for another boundary before reverse sweeping the fourth ball to make it two fours in the over.

England are 21 for no loss in three overs, needing 36 runs to win the match.

R Ashwin opens the bowling. Alastair Cook is beaten off the first ball as it stays low and Dhoni fails to collect it as it goes for four byes.

Cook then plays the cut shot but gets a thick outside edge which flies past the slips for a four.

Nick Compton gives Ojha the charge off the first ball of the second over but is forced to defend before he smacks the third ball past mid-off for a four.

10:22   India's batsmen fail again!
- Scorecard

India 2nd inns: 142 all out (44.1 ovs)

England's spinners Monty Panesar and Graeme Swann were once again magnificent and used the conditions to the maximum to claim all the ten Indian wickets in the second innings.

Panesar finished with 11 wickets in the match as he claimed figures of 5-129 and 6-81 respectively. Swann took four wickets in both innings (4-70 and 4-43) to end with cumulative match figures of eight for 113 runs.

Gambhir was the lone Indian batsman to show some resistance in the Indian innings with a patient knock of 65. R Ashwin was the only other batsman to cross double figures with 11, while all the other batsmen were out for single digit scores.

They could last only 44.1 overs in the second innings on a wicket that has helped the spinners right from the start.

India 2nd inns: 142 all out (44.1 ovs)

Swann ends India's innings with the wicket of Gambhir, who is dismissed leg before wicket for a patient knock of 65, having hit six fours in 142 balls.

India are bowled out for 142 in their second innings leaving England with a lowly target of 57 to win the second Test match.

Replays show Gambhir was unlucky to be given out LBW as he got a thick inside edge which NZ umpire Tony Hill failed to spot.

India's innings lasted for 43 minutes on the fourth morning as they lost three wickets for 25 runs in 11.1 overs.

India 2nd inns: 140-9 (43 ovs)

Gambhir is fighting a lonely battle, he is currently batting on 64, having stayed at the wicket for 140 deliveries now, which is 23 overs out of 43.

Pragyan Ojha needs to continue the good work. He is looking solid and getting solidly behind the ball, he is showing good temperament out in the middle.

India lose two wickets early in the day as Harbhajan Singh and Zaheer Khan perished cheaply.

India 2nd inns: 131-9 (37.4 ovs)

Gambhir takes a single on the leg side off Panesar from the third delivery of the 36th over and does the same from the first ball of the next over.

Zaheer Khan is known to take on the bowlers. It remains to be seen whether he curbs his instinct of looking to attack the bowlers or will he apply himself and support Gambhir?

And Zaheer falls into the trap. He tries to slog sweep Panesar but gets a top edge and is caught by wicketkeeper Matt Prior on the leg side for one.

India's lead by 45 runs with just one wicket in hand.

India have lost an early wicket on Day 4. Graeme Swann strikes in the second over of the day with the wicket of Harbhajan Singh who is caught at first slip for six.

Harbhajan started the day with a bang, lofting Panesar over mid-off for a boundary. Gambhir made it two fours in the over when he glanced Panesar fine on the leg side as 10 runs came from the first over.

But Swann checked India's progress with an early wicket.
09:37   India's hopes rest on Gambhir

India will hope Gautam Gambhir can continue to build the Indian innings and take them to safety in the company of tailenders.

Harbhajan Singh has two centuries to his credit and will be looking to produce another big innings and take his team to safety.
