India 290-9 (90 ovs) vs Eng | Scorecard

At stumps on Day 1, India finish on a creditable 290 for nine in 90 overs with Shami unbeaten on 14 and Ishant on 12.

Anderson was the top bowler for England on Day 1 as he claimed four for 55 in 22 overs, while Broad took two for 79.

England were guilty of wasting the new ball in the morning session, bowling either too wide or too short and not making the Indians play much.

India lost four wickets for 32 runs in the space of nearly 15 nearly overs before Rahane's century took them to safety.

Mohammed Shami gets off the mark with a four as he clips a full delivery from Broad square on the leg side. Broad then bowls it wide down the leg side and again Prior can't get to it for four byes before Shami takes two from the last ball as runs continue to flow with the new ball.

Rahane looks in hurry at the moment. He smashes a short ball from Anderson through the leg side and finds the gap despite there being three fielders in the deep. He smashes the last ball of the over through midwicket clearing the fielder easily for another four to take his score to 98, having hit 14 fours and a six from 146 balls.

India have scored 30 runs from the last three overs to reach 265 for eight in 85 overs.

Broad from the other end as Bhuvneshwar hits the first ball past mid-on for another four before he smashes one through the off-side for the same result.

However, Broad gets revenge as he bowls Bhuvneshwar with a fully delivery that crashes into his stumps. The ball also seems to have kept much lower than expected and went under the bat as the right-hander tried to defend.

Bhuvneshwar played a good hand of 38 from 84 balls, adding 90 runs from 24.4 overs for the eighth wicket to help India recover after a batting collapse.

Stokes bowls a good over to Kumar as the second new ball is now just a couple of overs away.

Part-timer Ali comes back with a view to give the pacers a break before the new ball is taken.

Bhuvneshwar has done well with leaving the balls outside the off-stump but he is caught in two minds when playing against Stokes and ends up edging it past the slips for a four. The next ball is down the leg side and continues to slip away beating keeper Prior for four byes.

Rahane and Kumar have now put on 78 runs from 22.4 overs to register India's highest eighth wicket stand at Lord's.

After 80 overs, India have recovered 223 for seven and immediately England take the second new ball.
21:48   Rahane's fifty lifts India after batting collapse
India 196-7 (75 ovs) vs Eng | Scorecard

Rahane smashes a short ball from Plunkett over the cover region for a boundary to bring up his half-century in some style, from 101 balls. A very good innings from the youngster under the circumstances on a wicket offering a lot of help to the pace bowlers.

The last ball is again short and wide and this time Rahane hammers it through point for the second four of the over.

Bhuvneshwar is proving to be effective with the bat yet again as he survives 50 deliveries at the crease without looking in any sort of problem.

Rahane is lucky to survive as Plunkett nearly gets the edge with a perfect outswinger which moves away.

Bhuvneshwar gaining in confidence as he flicks Stokes fine on the leg side for a four. In the next over, Rahane pulls a short ball from Plunkett through the square leg region for a four and the next ball is also pulled but this time for a single with three men on the boundary now.

India 175-7 (70 ovs) vs Eng | Scorecard

Meanwhile Ali is rushing through this covers and not causing much problems for the Indians. Rahane is waging a lone battle as he plays another cracking drive through the covers for a four to take his score to 42.

Finally, Ali gets a breather as Plunkett comes into the attack. Immediately, he gets Bhuvneshwar to edge one which falls short of the slips and they pick a single.

Rahane then slaps a short ball through the off-side for a four to continue his good innings out in the middle as he attempts to bail India out of trouble.

Bhuvneshwar plays with caution against Broad before he drives the last ball through the covers for a four to take his score to 12.

India 151-7 (60 ovs) vs Eng | Scorecard

England persist with the spin of Ali despite having the opportunity of running through the Indian lower order with their battery of pacers.

Rahane takes an easy single to bring up India's 150-run mark, in the 59th over.

India are 151 for seven in 60 overs with Rahane fighting hard on 30 from 67 balls and Bhuvneshwar Kumar on four.
20:43   Binny falls for nine as India lose 7th wicket
India 149-7 (58 ovs) vs Eng | Scorecard

Once again, it is Anderson who starts proceedings at the start of a new session. Rahane picks up a single on the leg side from the third ball before Binny takes one on the off-side to get two runs from the over.

England continue with Ali and India's lower order would be happy to face him rather than pacers on a pitch still doing a lot.

India milk Ali for three easy singles before Anderson bags another wicket, in the next over.

This time it is Binny, who falls leg before wicket for nine, after being beaten by the incoming delivery as India slip to 145 for seven.

Could that have gone over the stumps? Binny is reluctant to leave and walks off visibly dejected towards the dressing room. Hawk Eye shows that the ball could have missed the stumps and gone over it.

The in-form Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who hit a half-century in both innings of the Nottingham Test, gets off the mark in some style. He flicks a full delivery on the pads through midwicket for a boundary.

The visitors collapsed in the post lunch session, losing four wickets for 67 runs in 28 overs.

India 140-6 (55 ovs) vs Eng | Scorecard

Ali's part-time spin has fetched England a wicket now as Jadeja falls leg before wicket for three to leave India tottering at 128 for six, losing their fourth wicket of the session.

Jadeja pushed forward but played down the line and umpire Kumara Dharmasena had no choice but to rule him out.

England going for the kill as Anderson comes back into the attack with all-rounder Stuart Binny coming out to join Rahane, who is batting well on 21.

Rahane plays out the over from Anderson before Binny gets off the mark with a straight boundary off Ali, lofting the off-spinner back over his head.

India 127-5 (50 ovs) vs Eng | Scorecard

India reeling at 123 for five in the 48th over.

Broad finally gets due reward for his fine bowling since morning as India continue to slip.

With all the pacers having picked up a wicket each, it is surprise to see Ali bowling from end.

It will be interesting to see if Anderson comes into the attack with Ravindra Jadeja coming out to bat.

Jadeja survives a huge shout for leg before wicket, beaten by a full delivery that came in slightly. He turns the next ball through midwicket for three runs as the crowd continue to boo.

India are 127 for five in 50 overs with Rahane on 20 from 47 balls and Jadeja on three.
19:39   Pujara out for 28 to leave India in trouble
India 121-4 (45 ovs) vs Eng | Scorecard

Stokes bags the crucial wicket of Pujara, who is bowled by the inswinging delivery after a patient innings of 28, having stayed at the wicket for 117 balls and hitting four boundaries in the process.

That is a big blow for India as Pujara had spent a lot of time at the crease and his wicket exposes the lower order in the post lunch session with the ball still doing a lot.

Interestingly, England bring back part-time spinner Mooen Ali into the attack with Dhoni clearly struggling against the pacers.

Rahane will need to bat as long as possible. He is looking good as he plays a drive past mid-off for a couple and then hits Ali through point for a four.

Pujara strokes a full delivery past point for a four to take his score to 19, having faced 92 balls so far.

India 87-3 (32 ovs) vs Eng | Scorecard

Anderson gets the key wicket of Kohli, who edges the outswinger and is caught by Prior diving to his right. Kohli looked good as he scored 25 from 34 balls but was done in by another splendid delivery from Anderson, who bowled on the stumps and got enough movement to claim the wicket.

Ajinkya Rahane gets a single on the leg side as Anderson ends another successful over, his figures read: two for 15 in 11 overs including six maiden overs.
18:24   Pujara, Kohli steady India after openers perish
India 77-2 (30 ovs) vs Eng | Scorecard

Kohli gets a leg bye from the third ball before Pujara leaves the next two balls and is hit on the pads off the last ball resulting in a muted appeal which is turned down.

Broad comes back and he starts off by bowling wide off the stumps as Kohli is happy to let them go. The first four deliveries are left alone before Kohli taps it on the off-side and looks for a single but Pujara is not interested and he defends the last ball.

Three runs from the next over from Anderson as India reach 77 for two in 30 overs with Kohli on 22 from 28 balls and Pujara on 14 from 76 balls.

India 73-2 (27 ovs) vs Eng | Scorecard

At lunch on Day 1, India are 73 for two in 27 overs with Kohli on 20 from 19 balls and Pujara on 11 from 66 balls.

India would have been happy losing just two wickets in the session on a pitch which was so green and offered a lot of help to the bowlers throughout. Infact, England were guilty of wasting the new ball, bowling either too short or too wide and not making the Indian batsmen play enough.

Anderson was superb with the new ball, bowling a long first spell of one for 11 in eight overs which included six maidens. Plunkett got the wicket of Vijay for figures of one for 20 in seven overs, while Broad bowled six overs for 16 runs and Stokes five overs for 14 runs.
17:32

Part-timer Mooen Ali to bowl the final over before the lunch break. Kohli turns the first ball to deep square leg for one before Pujara takes a single to mid-on.

Kohli (20) is dropped off the last ball as Prior fails to hold on to the outside edge, his second drop of the match so far.

17:26
India 71-2 (25 ovs) vs Eng | Scorecard

Stokes bowls a wide half-volley which Kohli drives stylishly through the covers, coming forward to drive the ball off the middle for a wonderful boundary -- easily the shot of the day so far. He then picks a single from the fourth ball to mid-on before Pujara sees off the last two balls.

Kohli looking positive as he flicks Plunkett through midwicket for a couple before he flicks the next ball fine on the leg side for a four. Pujara has raced to 12 from eight balls, while Pujara is on 10 from 56 balls.

Plunkett again bowls a full delivery on the pads which Kohli flicks through midwicket as Anderson makes a good stop on the ropes to keep it down to three.

England's pacers keeping it full to Kohli, who plays another good drive off the front foot but is unable to beat the fielder at short cover. Stokes then gifts Kohli a full toss which he drives straight back past the bowler for a boundary, which takes him to 19 from 12 balls with the help of three fours.

India 53-1 (22 ovs) vs Eng | Scorecard

Vijay drives a full delivery through mid-off for two runs and two balls later he hits it through the covers where Anderson misfields for another couple to get four runs from the over.

WICKET!!! Plunkett makes the breakthrough as Vijay is caught by Ballance at third slip after scoring 24 from 67 balls. Vijay tried to flick it on the leg side but got an outside edge as the ball moved away where Ballance took a good diving catch.

Virat Kohli takes a single to get off the mark with a single on the off side. The last ball is short and wide down the leg side which beats Prior for four byes to take India past the 50-run mark.

India 43-1 (20 ovs) vs Eng | Scorecard

Plunkett adjusts his length in his second over, bowling a tad fuller. Vijay is beaten off the third ball before he edges the next but it falls short of the slips and is then beaten off the last two deliveries of the over.

Ben Stokes comes into the attack, replacing Anderson, who bowled a long first spell of eight overs for 11, including six maidens having picked the wicket of Dhawan. Even Stokes not bowling on the stumps as Pujara is content to leave four deliveries of that over.

Meanwhile, Vijay steers a short ball from Plunkett which goes in the air and beats a diving Joe Root at gully for a four. Once again Vijay, who hit a century in the first Test, is looking settled as he drives a full delivery straight past mid-off for a four.

Pujara leaves the first two deliveries from Stokes who then tries to compensate by bowling on the stumps which is flicked to deep square leg for a single.

Meanwhile, Plunkett bowls a short ball down the leg side which is well stopped by Prior before Pujara ducks under another short ball and is then beaten by one which moves away after pitching, beating the edge of the bat.

After 20 overs, India are 43 for one with Vijay on 20 from 59 balls and Pujara on nine from 51 balls.
16:42
India 34-1 (15 ovs) vs Eng | Scorecard

A longish first spell for Anderson as he comes on to bowl the seventh over of his first spell. Pujara seems to have broken his bat and calls for replacement as the umpires take drinks at the same time to save some time. Again, Pujara looking to leave as much as possible as England continue to bowl wide.

The first bowling chance of the day as Liam Plunkett comes in to replace Broad, who bowled six overs for 16 runs in his first spell.

The first two balls on the shorter as Vijay leaves it before he takes a single on the leg side from the fourth ball. Pujara is also happy to offer no stroke to the last two deliveries.

A mammoth effort from Anderson as he comes on to bowl his eighth over on the trot. He is looking to bowl more on the stumps in this over as Vijay gets an edge from the first ball for a single to point before Pujara picks on the leg side. Vijay takes a single from the fifth ball on the leg side and Pujara flicks the last ball square on the leg side for a four as India reach 34 for one in 15 overs.

16:25   Vijay, Pujara steady India after early wicket
India 25-1 (12 ovs) vs Eng | Scorecard

Finally, Anderson concedes his first runs, in his sixth over. Vijay edges one which flies through the gaps between slips and gully for a boundary in his favourite thirdman region.

Pujara gets off the mark with three runs as he steers Broad past point, from the 25th ball he faces.

Vijay then misses out a half volley on leg stumps as he fails to beat mid-on with the flick before he takes two runs past point.

16:18
India 16-1 (10 ovs) vs Eng | Scorecard

Anderson continues to bowl maidens, five in a row now. His figures currently read 5-5-0-1. He would be looking to pick another wicket or two in his first spell with the wicket offering so much help to the pacers.

England's opening bowlers guilty of not making the Indian batsmen play enough as they continue to bowl away from the stumps.

Just a leg bye from the 10th over as India reach 16 for one with Vijay on four from 26 balls and Pujara yet to get off the mark from 23 balls.

Interestingly, 56 dot balls in the first 10 overs.
16:07

Pujara is then beaten by one that bounces quite a bit and moves away as the right-hander plays a rare loose shot away from his body. Lot of swing with the new ball for both the England's pacers and India's batsmen can only defend for the moment.

Vijay doing well to leave as much as possible as Broad bowls another maiden over. India 15 for one in eight overs.
15:55
India 11-1 (5 ovs) vs Eng | Scorecard

Broad also nearly picks up another wicket in his next over. This time Vijay, who is trying to leave as many deliveries as possible, finally edges one. Wicketkeeper Matt Prior puts down a difficult chance diving full length to his right.

Anderson bowling closer to the stumps and making the batsmen play more than Broad is doing at the moment. New batsman Cheteshwar Pujara defends the first ball before he drives the next but it is stopped in the covers. Pujara's solid technique and temperament will be tested here as he sees off the over from Anderson.

India are 11 for no loss in five overs with four of them maidens. Anderson is yet to concede a run in his three overs.
15:47   Anderson strikes early, Dhawan out for 7
India 11-1 (3 ovs) vs Eng | Scorecard

Anderson getting plenty of movement as he moves the ball away from Dhawan, who is content to watch it through to the keeper.

WICKET!!! Anderson strikes early with the wicket of Dhawan. A virtually unplayable delivery which moves away quite a bit and Dhawan can only edge it as Gary Ballance takes a sharp catch at third slip. India 11 for one in three overs.

Former England cricketer Isa Guha posted the picture of the Lord's pitch on Twitter and it certainly looks very green.

"It's green!!! 'Bowlers breath a sigh if relief'," Guha wrote.

England bowlers will hope to make most of winning the toss and bowling first on this pitch by claiming a few early wickets. Meanwhile, India's top order will have their task cut out and their primary focus for the first couple of hours atleast would be survival.

15:06   England win toss, elect to bowl against India at Lord's
England captain Alastair Cook has won the toss and elected to bowl against India in the second Test at Lord's, on Thursday.

Both teams are unchanged from the first Test match at Nottingham, which finished in a draw.

The pitch looks quite green with a lot of grass left on the 22-yard strip.

There was a lot of off-field dramas leading into the Test match with James Anderson and Ravindra Jadeja charged by the ICC for their clash during the first match in Nottingham.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) charged England's bowling spearhead under level 3 of the code of conduct for allegedly "abusing and pushing Ravindra Jadeja" during the opening Test, while Jadeja was charged under Level 2 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel.
