STUMPS - DAY 1

India 239-0 (56 ovs) vs B'desh | Scorecard

Dhawan comes down the track and tries to loft Taijul over midwicket but gets a thick inside edge to deep square leg for two runs which takes him to 149.

He drives the next ball to mid-off for a single to complete his 150, from 158 balls.

With the light fading further, the umpires decide to call stumps on Day 1.

India have dominated the opening day as they scored 239 for no loss in 56 overs after nearly three hours were lost to rain.

Dhawan made a good comeback to the team, smashing 150 from 158 balls, having hit 21 fours, while at the other end Vijay played a solid innings of 89 from 178 balls.

If Bangladesh don't strike early on Day 2, they will be in for a long day on the field on a flat wicket offering no help at all to the bowlers.
17:09

India 234-0 (54 ovs) vs B'desh | Scorecard

Dhawan in the mood now as he reverse paddles Taijul fine on the off-side for a four followed by a single to get five from the 52nd over.

Pacer Shahid to bowl in fading light with the umpires having a chat about the quality of light, we still have 10 overs remaining in the day.

A few quiet overs as the score advances to 234 for no loss in 54 overs.
16:51   Dhawan slams century, Vijay hits 50 as India dominate

India 225-0 (50 ovs) vs B'desh | Scorecard

Shakib comes back into the attack, in place of Jubair. Dhawan steers the first ball fine on the off-side and gets two runs to thirdman and gets one from the fourth ball before Vijay keeps strike with a single from the last ball.

Three more singles from the next over bowled by Hom, his 13th of the innings before Shakib sends down a maiden.

Part-time off-spinner Imrul Kayes comes into the attack, he is the seventh bowler to be used by Bangladesh today. India's openers collect three easy singles from his first over before the umpires decide to take the drinks break, the second of the extended long session.

Two singles before Shakib bowls one down the leg side which Dhawan helps fine for a four. A single from the last ball takes the score to 225 for five in 50 overs, scoring at exactly four and half runs per over.

Dhawan has led the charge with his run-a-ball 138, while Vijay has looked ever so solid on 86 from 161 balls.
16:30   Dhawan hits century as India's openers dominate

India 208-0 (45 ovs) vs B'desh | Scorecard

Both Hom and Jubair on the defensive, looking to stem the flow of boundaries but Vijay and Dhawan are content to play the singles and twos and keep the scoreboard moving.

After a few quiet overs, Vijay lofts leg-spinner Jubair over mid-on for a six, the first of the Indian innings to take India past the 200-run mark, in the 44th over.

Vijay survives a huge shout for LBW against Hom as he plays on the backfoot and is struck right in front of the stumps. Umpire Nigel Llong turns down the appeal and points out that the batsman had got an inside edge.
16:12

India 189-0 (40 ovs) vs B'desh | Scorecard

Dhawan comes down the track and flicks Hom through midwicket for a four to continue India's good start on Day 1.

Already 25 boundaries have been hit in the first 39 overs of the Indian innings as Bangladesh's bowlers struggle to keep things under control.

Dhawan in no mood to stop as he gives Hossain the charge and smashes him straight down the ground for a boundary.

The leg-spinner manages to beat Dhawan, who looks to drive through the off-side but gets an edge which goes past the slip fielder for a four.

14 runs from the over takes India to 189 for no loss in 40 overs. Dhawan has dominated right from the start to hit 120 from 113 balls, having hit 19 fours so far, while Vijay has blossomed after a slow start to hit 69 from 127 balls, with the help of eight fours.
15:51   Dhawan races to century, India in control on Day 1

India 167-0 (36 ovs) vs B'desh | Scorecard

Leg-spinner Jubair comes into the attack. Dhawan tries to paddle sweep the first ball but fails to make proper connection for a single on the leg side and Vijay picks one two balls later.

Dhawan is desperate to get after the young leggie as he flicks a full delivery but is unable to beat the fielder at midwicket.

He gives the charge to the last ball and is nearly done in by the googly but gets a thick outside edge which goes on the off-side.

Vijay survives a huge shout for LBW off Hom as he looks to play across the line on the leg side but misses.

In the next over, he reaches out to a full delivery and hits it through the covers but gets just a single with a fielder placed at sweeper.

Dhawan flicks the next ball square on the leg side for a four to bring up his hundred in some style, from 101 balls. This is his third Test century and his first against Bangladesh, having hit 16 fours.
15:40   Vijay, Dhawan hit 50s to put India in control

India 156-0 (33 ovs) vs B'desh | Scorecard

The boundaries are coming from both ends now. This time Vijay makes most of some width as he slaps it through the off-side for a boundary. He comes forward to drive the next but gets an edge which goes past the slips for a four to raise his half-century from 98 balls, his first against Bangladesh.

The closest Bangladesh come to picking a wicket is a run out opportunity. Dhawan taps it on the off-side and calls Vijay for a quick single but they make it safely in the end despite a slight hesitation at the start.

The last ball is a freebie as Vijay goes back and steers it behind point for a four, he has been a lot more positive since resumption.

Off-spinner Shuvgata Hom comes back into the attack in place of pacer Shahid. Even he is guilty of dropping it short as Vijay punches it through the covers but this time he gets just two runs.
15:28

India 137-0 (30 ovs) vs B'desh | Scorecard

Bangladesh looking to dry up the flow of runs and keep the scoring rate in check unlike in the morning session when the two openers hit boundaries at regular intervals.

Two singles each from Taijul and Shahid's overs before Dhawan makes his presence felt. He gives Taijul the charge and plays a delightful drive through the covers for a four and keeps strike from the last ball as eight come from the over.

In the next over, the left-hander plays another cracking cover drive but this time the fielder at short cover manages to stop it.

But Dhawan finds the gap off the very next delivery for a cracking four through the covers, managing to find the gap perfectly through the off-side. He slaps the next ball to deep point for a single to take his score to 87 and Vijay does the same two balls later for one.

This proving to be too easy for the Indian batsmen and they are content keeping the scoreboard moving with singles and the odd boundary in between.

Dhawan gives Taijul the charge and converts it into a full toss before placing it to the right of the fielder at mid-off for a four to move into the 90s.

India 113-0 (25 ovs) vs B'desh | Scorecard

The two Indian openers walk out to the middle to resume the Indian innings after a rain interruption of nearly three hours.

Dhawan would be looking to continue from where he started off, having hit a quickfire 74 from 71 balls, while Vijay was rock solid on 33 from 70 balls.

Taijul will finish off his fifth over with three deliveries still remaining to be bowled. Vijay defends the first two balls after resumption before keeping strike with a single from the last ball of the over.

Pacer Shahid to have a go as he comes back for his second spell. Vijay steers the third ball past the slips for a boundary through the vacant thirdman region before he gets one from the fifth ball.

It has started to drizzle in Fatullah but the umpires have no problem in letting the game continue.

Dhawan opts to take off his helmet and nearly gives his wicket away. He plays an uppish drive on the leg side as Hom at midwicket makes a diving stop but is unable to hold on.

The drizzle has increased and the umpires have no option but to take the players off the field.

Dhawan went after the Bangladesh bowlers in the morning session, having slammed 74 from 71 balls with the help of 12 fours. At the other end, Vijay provided the solidity, to score 33 from 70 balls with none of the Bangladesh able to get anything from the pitch.

The most impressive part of Dhawan's batting has been his eagerness to use his feet against the Bangladesh spinners.

Vijay has been content to bide his time despite his partner Dhawan going in full flow and hitting boundaries at regular intervals.

After 20 overs, India are comfortably placed on 84 for no loss with Dhawan on 65 from 64 balls and Vijay on 19 from 56 balls.

Except for Shahid creating a few problems with the new ball, India's openers have looked completely at ease so far.

Dhawan in no mood to stop his good flow as he gives Shakib the charge and flicks him through midwicket for a four to bring up India's 50, in the 11th over.

Meanwhile, it has gone dark over the stadium at Fatullah with a lot of black clouds hovering over. The floodlights have been switched on at the moment.

A fielder has been stationed at deep midwicket but Dhawan still goes after the short ball, this time pulling it between deep midwicket and deep square leg for another four.

Part-timer medium pacer Soumya Sarkar will share the new ball. Dhawan defends the first two balls on the off-side before he gets off the mark with a single.

Vijay is struck on the pads as he is beaten by the inswinger and Sarkar immediately appeals for LBW but umpire Kumar Dharmasena feels it was sliding down the leg side. That was a close call for the India opener.

Shahid gets Dhawan to edge one outside the off-stump but falls short of the fielder at third slip as Shahid bowls his second maiden over in succession.

Bangladesh must be regretting not including a second specialist seamer with Shahid getting some early help from the track.

Sarkar continues as Vijay gets off the mark with a single on the off-side from the 11th ball he faced.

Two balls later, Dhawan punches a short wide delivery through the covers for the first boundary of the Indian innings as the score moves to seven for no loss in four overs.

But Vijay manages to see off the rest of the over as Shahid starts off with a maiden over.

A little bit of movement in the opening over for Shahid.

Cheteshwar Pujara, who had a below-par series in Australia, also misses out as Rohit Sharma retains his place in the middle order.

08:55   Rejuvenated India start favourites vs Bangladesh
Welcome to the coverage of the one-off Test match between Bangladesh and India in Fatullah, starting on Wednesday.

Young Virat Kohli's proactive and aggressive style of leadership will be tested when India take on sprightly underdogs Bangladesh.

Kohli was anointed with full-time Test captaincy after Mahendra Singh Dhoni quit in the middle of the Australia series. The Bangladesh Test match will, in essence, be the start of life for the team -- which comprises cricketers of an average age of 26 -- without Dhoni.

For Kohli, as he starts a new chapter in his thus far glittering career, it will also be a test of his tactical acumen as he would need to decide on whether India will go with six batsmen and four bowlers, with a specialist wicketkeeper, or with an additional bowler to ensure that taking 20 wickets is not a problem.

On paper, it's another David versus Goliath battle as India have won six out of the seven Test matches between the two countries.

Bangladesh drew just one in Chittagong in 2007, with the help of rain.

Kohli will certainly not take the next door neighbours to be the proverbial 'banana peel' that minnows often turn out to be in such mismatched contests.

The task will be cut out for the Bangladeshi bowlers, led by their fastest pacer, Rubel Hossain, and wily all-rounder Shakib-al-Hasan, as they face the challenge to stop a formidable batting line-up, which is capable of posting a monumental score in helpful conditions.

Kohli, whose last Test series against the mighty Australians earned him a whopping 692 runs, including four centuries, would like to cash in on this opportunity to get another hefty score against his name.
