Ravichandran Ashwin claimed six wickets as India crushed New Zealand by 197 runs in the first Test in Kanpur.

Chasing a mammoth 434 for victory, New Zealand were bowled out for 236 in their second innings as India took a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

Deservedly, Ashwin claimed the final wicket as he got Wagner leg before wicket for a duck to finish with excellent figures of six for 132 in 35.3 overs to complete a ten-wicket match-haul.

Ronchi (80) and Santner (71) offered some resistance by the rest of the batsmen were again blown away by the two Indian spinners, mainly Ashwin.

Shami also made a vital contribution with two wickets before lunch to speed up India's victory charge on the final day.

The second Test match will be played at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata, from September 30.
