Woakes hits maiden Test century; England on top

Woakes drives Ashwin straight down the ground for two runs to take his score to 69, his best in Test cricket, and he keeps strike with a single from the last ball.

The runs are coming freely at the moment, with boundaries coming quite regularly.

Woakes doing the majority of the scoring in the last few overs. A short wide delivery from Ishant is steered through the off-side for a four who then punches the third ball through the covers for two runs.

Ishant overpitches as Woakes slaps it straight back past the fast bowler for another four before he pulls the next for a single to fine leg to take his score to 80, with Bairstow on 79 at the other end.

Even the luck is not going India's way. Ashwin gets Woakes to edge one but it flies past Rahane at slip and races away for a four.

Pandya comes back into the attack to replace Ishant as India are left in a desperate situation with the lead inching towards the 200-run mark.

Three singles from the Pandya over, who also manages to beat Bairstow outside the off-stump as the ball narrowly misses the edge.

Woakes helped by some poor bowling from Ashwin. The off-spinner bowls a full delivery on the pads which Woakes flicks past short fine leg for a four to raise the 150-run stand from 220 balls.

An inside edge off the last ball as Woakes tries to flick but he still able to pick a single and retain strike.

Woakes has enjoyed the rub of the green in the last few overs. He goes hard at wide full delivery from Pandya only to get a thick outside edge which goes wide of Pujara in the slips and away for a boundary.

That was the 15th boundary for Woakes, who takes his score to 94 and closes in on his maiden Test hundred.

He throws his bat at the next ball and is beaten before he connects with the third ball but substitute Ravindra Jadeja swoops to his left and keeps them down to one with a sliding stop.

In the same over, Bairstow gets a thick outside edge which also falls short of Rahane at wide slip for a single to thirdman.

In the next over, Bairstow drives Ashwin through the covers for two runs before he paddle sweeps the next fine on the leg side for a four to take his score into the 90s.

Woakes drives Pandya to deep extra cover for a single to bring up England's 300, in the 71st over, while taking his score to 97.

He pulls a short ball from Pandya over mid-on for three runs to complete his maiden Test century, from 129 balls, having hit 15 fours.
