India lose openers early before rain halts play

Rain brings an early halt to proceedings in the morning session as India walk into the lunch break on 17 for two in nine overs, still needing another 272 runs to avoid the innings defeat.

Pujara is unbeaten on five from 24 balls and Rahane is on one with captain Virat Kohli having to drop down the order after he didn't take the field in the morning session because of a stiff back.

It was James Anderson once again who did the damage as he dismissed both the openers very early.

Murali Vijay was caught behind off an inside edge for a duck while KL Rahul was dismissed leg before wicket for 10.

Earlier, England declared their first innings on 396 for seven in 88.1 overs after taking a huge lead of 289 runs.

Chris Woakes finished unbeaten on a splendid 137 not out, his maiden century in Test cricket. He put on 76 runs for the seventh wicket with Sam Curran, who stroked a fluent 40, before his wicket to Hardik Pandya resulted in England's declaration.
