The young Hanuma Vihari hit a half-century on debut to steer India to 240 for seven at lunch on Day 3 of the fifth and final Test against England on Sunday.

Vihari scored a gutsy 56, putting on 77 runs for the seventh wicket with Ravindra Jadeja, who was unbeaten on a vital 41 at the lunch break, while  Ishant Sharma was not out on 1.

India are now trailing England's first innings score of 332 by 92 runs, with three wickets in hand.

India had lost five wickets in the final session on Day 2 but Vihari and Jadeja steadied the ship in the morning session on the third day with some solid defensive batting.

Vihari made it a memorable debut in Tests with a half-century as India kept the England bowlers at bay, with just one wicket falling in the morning session.
