Rain halts Kiwis charge in Napier Test

The third and final Test between New Zealand and Pakistan ended in a draw after rain washed out the final session of play at McLean Park, in Napier, on Tuesday, leaving the series drawn 1-1.

Set 208 for victory, New Zealand were 90 without loss and scoring freely when a drizzle that turned into a downpour forced the players off the field.

B J Watling scored 60 off 62 balls and fellow-opener Tim McIntosh 23 off 54 after New Zealand got off to a superb start to the chase.

Captain Daniel Vettori, who scored 134 in New Zealand's first innings and claimed two wickets for 93 runs from 56 overs in Pakistan's second innings of 455, was named man-of-the-match.

Earlier in the day, the Kiwis claimed six wickets to dismiss Pakistan and keep the Test alive.

Pakistan resumed on 347 for four, an overall lead of 99 runs, and hoped that Umar Akmal and brother Kamran Akmal (56 not out) would add to the tally.

Umar had a reprieve off the second ball of the day when he edged Chris Martin past wicketkeeper Brendon McCullum and first slip Ross Taylor to advance from 48 to his third half-century.

Nineteen-year-old Umar was eventually dismissed for 77, caught by McCullum, and ended as the series' leading run-scorer with 379, at an average of 63.16.

Misbah-ul Haq's ugly attempted sweep to Vettori gifted the captain his first wicket of the Test in his 40th over, when McCullum pulled off a smart stumping.

Mohammad Aamer was also lax in the last over before lunch when he swept Vettori to Martin in the deep to give the skipper figures of two for 93 from 56 overs.

It took that unlikely bowling hero Martin Guptill to wrap things up. The part-time spinner trapped Mohammad Asif leg before wicket to finish with figures of 3-37 for the innings, the best of the Kiwi attack.

Vettori later expressed disappointment at missing a chance to clinch the series.

"We were denied an opportunity this afternoon, so we look back with a bit of disappointment," he said.

"I am pleased that we fought long and hard enough to give ourselves a chance. It was a pretty competitive series," he added.

Pakistan captain Mohammad Yousuf thanked Allah while conceding that his team was saved by rain.

"We were lucky. Allah helped us because of rain, otherwise it would be difficult to defend (208) on this track.

"It's disappointing for them, not for us. We are lucky." he said.

New Zealand won the first Test in Dunedin by 32 runs, and Pakistan won the second by 141 runs in Wellington.
