Neil McKenzie and Quinton de Kock are punishing Mumbai bowlers smashing boundaries to all corners off the park.

 

The duo played sensibly after they had lost wickets up front then opened up taking on Dhawal Kulkarni.

 

Kulkarni's third over saw Lions get 17 runs to get the much-needed momentum.

 

At the end of 16 overs Lions were 123-2

Harbhajan Singh continues as Niel McKenzie takes a single. Quinton de Kock takes a single too -- knocking the ball around.

 

De Kock has been impressive hitting two sixes so far and as we speak McKenzie plays a reverse sweep for a boundary.

 

Lions getting to move on now. A single to round off the over as Lions reach 75-2 from 11 overs.

Harbhajan Singh strikes in his first over as he removes Gulam Bodi for 19.

 

It was a struggle for Bodi, who went in for a sweep, got the outside edge and was caught in the slips by Rohit Sharma.

Peterson looking to smash a wide delivery from Malinga hit it straight to Ambati Rayudu, who took a stunner at covers.

Petersen, then flicks one down the leg side for a single. A single off the final ball as Lions reach 11-0 after 3 overs.

22:32   Lions restrict Mumbai Indians to 157-6

Some tight bowling from Highveld Lions means Mumbai Indians could only muster 157-6 from their 20 overs.

 

Mumbai started off fine fashion with Dwayne Smith smashing the bowlers to all corners, but once he was gone the visitors struggled to keep up the momentum.

 

The move to promote Mitchell Johnson too didn't click as he laboured himself to 30 from 29 balls.

 

It was Dinesh Kartik's late show that Mumbai could cross the 150-run  mark.

 For Lions Dirk Nannes and Aaron Phangiso were the most economial bowlers with figures of 1-15 and 1-17 respectievely.

This time round its Sohail Tanvir, who castled Kieron Pollard with a brilliant yorker. Pollard tried his best to get his bat down on time but failed as the ball crashed on the middle stump.

Dinesh Karthik walks in and smokes one over square leg for a maximum -- much needed one for Mumbai Indians.

Dirk Nannes comes back for his second spell as the first ball is whistled past Rohit Sharma.

 

Lions have done a good job in keeping the Mumbai Indians quite. Third ball off the over, Rohit manages to get a single.

 

A flick to the legside helps Johnson to increase his score. And just as we speak, Nannes castles Rohit Sharma for 27.

 

Rohit looking to chip the left-armer missed the line completely as the ball crashed onto middle and off stump.

 

Mumbai were 99-3 after 14 overs.

Aaron Phangiso strikes a big blow as he castles Tendulkar for 16. Good bowling from the left arm spinner.

 

Tendulkar was bogged down by the left-arm spinner with some tight deliveries.

 

Tendulkar fell while going to cut a ball that was too close the to stumps as he missed the ball completely.

Next up he takes up a quick single on the legside. Tendulkar is looking aggressive after Dwyane Smith's dismissal.

 

A square cut gets Tendulkar a single.

 

A quick delivery from de Bruyn has Rohit going in for a pull bt no harm done. Mumbai were 63-1 after 8 overs.

 

Tendulkar is on 16, while Rohit is on 5.

Chris Morris strikes for Highveld Lions as he removes Dwayne Smith, who was looking dangerous in his stay at the crease.

 

Smith who had smoked a 19-ball 26 was adjudged leg before wicket to a pacy delivery from the South African bowler.

Mumbai Indians are off to a decent start after being put into bat first. The first two over produced 17 runs.

 

Chris Morris into the attack now -- bowling to Sachin Tendulkar.

 

Morris to Tendulkar a short of a length delivery -- too high for Tendulkar as the ball runs down behind the keeper for a boundary.

 

Tendulkar takes a single -- off to Smith now.

 

Morris to Smith as the West Indian clips off his hips for a boundary. He follows it up with another boundary.

Highveld Lions have won the toss and have elected to bowl first in a good track here in Johannesburg.

 

The first game saw Sydney Sixers put up 185 after being put into bat first, so it's a true wicket.

 

Lions's skipper Alviro Petereson reckons he has the bowling unit to restrict the visitors.

 

All eyes will be on Harbhajan Singh and how he performs and are going in Malinga, Mitchell Johnson (who is making his debut in Mumbai colours), Dwayne Smith and Kieron Pollard.

Hilfenhaus pulls it over midwicket for two runs before a single to the covers.

Ashwin then looks to slog a slower delivery over midwicket but ends up holing it on the leg side where the deep midwicket fielder drops the catch.

Ashwin plays a good shot through the covers for a boundary to make 21 needed from the last over.

Chennai need 44 runs from three overs with the lower order batsmen out in the middle in Ravindra Jadeja and R Ashwin.

Jadeja hits Strac on the off-side for a single before Ashwin chips it over the point for a four to get off the mark.

The next ball is a full on the pads and Ashwin goes deep in the crease and somehow chips it over midwicket for two runs.

He tries a similar shot off the next ball but this time skies it high on the leg side but Watson drops it, running back from midwicket to give away two runs.

Ashwin then plays another clumsy shot through midwicket as he flicks it uppishly but gets a boundary before he is beaten by a yorker.

Dhoni starts the 17th over with a boundary as he punches Henriques down the ground, beating the fielder at mid-on and then takes a single on the leg side.

Henriques then deals a big blow to Chennai's chances with the key wicket of Raina. The left-hander lofts it down the ground but Steve Smith takes a good catch inches inside the boundary line to complete the catch.

Dhoni then throws his bat at a delivery outside the off-stump but misses. He connects with the next ball as he heaves it on the leg side but is brilliantly caught at deep midwicket by Hazlewood, diving forward and holds on.

Chennai need 61 from five overs, at more than 12 runs per over.

Cummins to bowl his fourth and final over. Dhoni drives the first ball down to long-on for one before Raina drives it through the covers for a boundary to bring up his fifty in style, from 28 balls.

Cummins bowl it full and wide as Raina gets it off the toe of bat and it goes straight to the fielder in the covers.

Cummins follows that up with a well disguised slower ball which Raina fails to get away and inside edges to the keeper Haddin.

The fifth ball is down the leg side and Raina plays it fine on the leg side for two runs. Raina ends the over with a delightful boundary as he steers a full delivery past the point fielder to make it 11 runs from the over.

Captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni walks out to bat and he defends the first ball to covers. He will need to get going rightaway with a required run rate in excess of 11 runs per over.

Dhoni flicks it to deep midwicket for a single and Raina takes one on the leg side before another single from Dhoni completes the over.

Chennai need 76 from seven overs for victory. Badrinath taps Cummins to the covers to pick up a single and bring Raina back on strike.

Raina is waiting on the backfoot, anticipating a quick bouncer from Cummins, who bowls a full delivery which is hit to midwicket.

The left-hander is sitting back in his crease as he throws his bat and lofts it through the covers for a boundary.

Cummins switches to round the wicket and beats Raina with a full delivery outside the off-stump.

The next ball is a yorker which Raina digs back to the bowler, who reacts quickly and hits the stumps but Raina has grounded the bat and gets an overthrow.

The next ball is a quick bouncer which goes over the batsman and keeper for five wides.

Badrinath continues to play the singles as he pushes Henriques to the covers to give the strike back to Raina.

The left-hander fails to beat point as he cuts the next ball but gets one from the misfield and Badrinath drives it to extra cover for another single to bring up Chennai's 100.

Raina gives himself room and looks for a big hit through the off-side but misses the shot.

Henriques tries a short ball at Raina, who rocks and pulls it over square leg for a six. The lack of pace meant Raina, who has problems with the short balls, had enough time to deal with it.

Raina ends the over with a boundary as he backs off and cuts it past the point fielder. He has raced to 40 from 21 balls to keep Chennai in the hunt.

Raina starts the 12th over with a boundary as he gives himself room but Watson bowls it on his body, which the left-hander turns in the gap behind square on the leg side.

Watson then bowls a quick bouncer to Badrinath, which goes over the batsman and is called a wide. The Chennai right-hander then steers it to the thirdman region for a single before Raina slogs it over midwicket for the second boundary of the over.

At the halfway stage, Chennai are 73 for one, needing 113 runs in ten overs for victory.

A wicket just at the right time for Sydney as du Plessis was looking to take the game away from them with his attacking batting.

Left-arm spinner Steve O'Keefe comes into the attack now, and he will bowl to new batsman Suresh Raina.

Raina defends the first ball to the covers before he is beaten off the next ball outside the off-stump followed by another dot ball.

Raina then chips it over the covers for two runs and then takes a single from the next ball.

Chennai then lose another wicket as Hussey plays the slog sweep, but is caught at deep midwicket by Lumb for 16.

Hussey drives the first ball from Cummins to long-off for one before du Plessis flicks it off his hips behind square on the leg side for a four.

The right-hander then takes a single on the leg side before Hussey is beaten by a quick delivery from Cummins, which swings a lot after pitching, before a single to thirdman.

Cummins then makes the vital breakthrough with the wicket of du Plessis, who holes out to long-off for a quickfire 43.

Shane Watson into the attack now and Hussey welcomes him with a boundary as he chips it over the cover fielder. He steers the next ball to the thirdman region for a single.

Du Plessis then chips it over mid-on, who runs back and stop it to keep it down to two runs before a single to covers.

Hussey flicks it behind square on the leg side for one before du Plessis chips it the same region for two runs.

Du Plessis has come out all guns blazing to lead Chennai's counter-attack. He uses his wrists to good effect as he chips Hazlewood over the off-side for a six and then turns it to deep square leg for one.

Du Plessis then looks to play another big shot but misses as the ball goes past the leg stump to keeper Haddin. The South African then flicks it on the leg side for a couple before a one-handed chip over the covers for another boundary.

Sydney continue with their pace blast as fast bowler Pat Cummins is introduced into the attack now.

The first ball is a full delivery on the pads and du Plessis chips it over the square leg region for a boundary.

He then drives the next ball on the up through the covers for another boundary. The fourth ball stays a bit low as du Plessis is struck on the pads and there is an appeal but it is going down the leg side.

Cummins then drops one short and du Plessis is quick to rock on the backfoot and pull it on the leg side for the third boundary of the over. He has raced to 20 from 14 balls, hitting three fours and a six.

Vijay then offers no shot to the next ball as it bounces and moves away from the right-hander.

Starc then gets the first wicket as he bowls Vijay with a full delivery as the right-hander plays all over it.

The ball swung in sharply as Vijay played outside the line and got a slight inside edge before it shattered into the stumps.

Faf du Plessis plays the first ball on the leg side before defending the next ball back to the bowler.

An excellent start for Starc as he starts off with a wicket-maiden.

Fast bowler Josh Hazlewood will open the bowling for Sydney, while Murali Vijay and Mike Hussey will be the openers for Chennai.

Hussey is beaten off the very first delivery as the short of good length bounces and moves away from him. What a good start by the pacer!

Hussey plays the second ball to midwicket for one before Vijay lets the next ball go through to the keeper.

Vijay then looks to play on the up as he plays it uppishly through the gull region for a single to the thirdman region.

Hussey then lets the fifth ball go through as it bounces over the stumps. He trusted the bounce enough to let it to and plays the last ball to midwicket as just two runs come from the first over.

Henriques changed the script completely with his smashing knock of 49 not out from 23 balls, hitting five fours and three sixes.

He put on a quickfire partnership of 75 runs in 39 balls for the fifth wicket with Smith, who made 26 from 17 balls.

Chennai's bowlers struggled in the last few overs as Sydney smashed 66 runs in the last five overs.

Hilfenhaus to bowl the final over and up against him are two Australians in Smith and Henriques.

He starts with a yorker which Henriques digs out before chopping it over the point region for a four. The right-hander then smashes it back over the bowler's head for another boundary.

However, he misses a full toss and inside edge it on the off-side for a single.

Smith then shuffles across and paddle sweeps it past the short fine leg fielder for the third boundary of the over.

Smith is caught at long-off from the final delivery of the innings as Sydney finish with a mammoth 185 for five in their 20 overs.

He then heaves a length delivery over square leg fence for back to back sixes, just missing the cheer girls, who duck for cover. 17 runs from four balls in the over already.

Henriques looks for another big shot down the ground but it goes on the bounce to long-off for a single.

Smith is quick to adjust to a slower ball as he turns it round the corner, beating the short fine leg fielder for a boundary.

22 runs from that over as Sydney are looking good for an imposing total around the 190-run mark.

Sydney have hammered 48 runs in the last three overs to take control.

Henriques is taking on the Chennai spinners as he lofts Ashwin over long-on for a six. Ashwin hits Henriques on the pads with a quicker delivery and appeals for LBW but it is turned down.

Henriques is turning it on. He makes room before flaying it through the covers for a delightful boundary.

Ashwin is hit for 13 runs in that over as he finishes with two for 32 in four overs.

Du Plessis comes on to bowl his fourth and final over. Smith chips down the track to the first ball and lofts it back over the bowler's head for a four. He then turns it on the leg side for a couple before a single to point where Hilfenhaus misfields.

Henriques then smashes the next ball powerfully back past the bowler for the second four of the over.

13 runs from that over as du Plessis finishes with 35 runs from four overs.

Ashwin brings some relief to the Chennai camp with the wicket of Haddin. The Sydney captain tries to pull a short ball but fails to get enough distance as Hilfenhaus dives forward running in from deep square leg to complete a brilliant catch.

Two balls later, Ashwin cripples Sydney with another wicket. Maddinson plays all over a quick, flat delivery from Ashwin only to miss it and is bowled for 12.

Moises Henriques is the new batsman for Sydney. He looks to cut the first ball but fails to beat the fielder at point and defends the next ball. He pulls the last ball on the leg side for a single to get off the mark.

What a superb over from Ashwin! 2 wickets and just two runs conceded. Sydney need to re-build for the next few overs before blasting at the end.

Haddin then chips down the track again and is beaten in the flight as he is hit on his pads, but umpire Asad Rauf turns down the appeal. It's very difficult to get LBWs on this wicket.

Jadeja then bowls it wide outside the off-stump as Watson tries to cut but misses and Dhoni fails to collect it too, ricocheting it over the first slip fielder for a boundary as the umpire gives it five wides.

Two balls later, Watson is once again quick to pounce on a short ball from Jadeja, pulling it over midwicket for another six.

Chennai get a lucky break as the dangerous Watson is run out. He hit it on the off-side and tried to run across for two runs but Hilfenhaus came up with a direct hit from sweeper cover to run out Watson for 46.

Maddinson is then beaten all ends up as Ashwin gets one to turn sharply before a single on the leg side.

Watson then makes full use of a long hop from Ashwin as he pulls it over midwicket for a monster SIX!!

He then plays the next ball on the leg side for a single as Ashwin gives away 10 runs in his first over.

Left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja into the attack now as Chennai look to pull back things.

And Jadeja starts with a bang, with a wicket off the first delivery. Lumb shuffled across and looked to play a short delivery on the leg side but missed and was ruled out leg before wicket.

Lumb must consider himself lucky as he was hit quite high on the pads and it looked as if the ball would have gone over the stumps, on a pitch offering extra bounce.

Bollinger comes on bowl his third over. Watson is looking in good nick as he times a ball down the ground but the fielder at mid-on does well to stop it. But Watson gets a boundary off the next ball as he flicks a full ball through midwicket.

Sydney are throwing their bat at anything full as Watson chips the fourth ball over mid-on, but it does not travel far for just two runs.

Chennai have now a short mid-on fielder, just next to the non-striker. Watson then hammers it on the off-side but straight to the cover fielder. However, he gets the next ball perfectly in the gap in the covers to end the over with a boundary as Sydney continue to find the boundaries.

After two good overs, Hilfenhaus gives away to Chennai's pacer Yo Mahesh.

Lumb immediately decides to target Mahesh as he lofts the first ball down the ground but fails to get it off the middle. Hilfenhaus misjudges the high catch at mid-off as he takes a few steps back but fails to get his hands on the ball and takes a tumble too.

Watson then chips it over point for another couple before he lofts the third ball over mid-on for three runs.

Lumb then finally gets his first boundary as he flicks it over the short fine leg fielder for a boundary, the first time he makes proper connection.

Mahesh then bowls a full delivery on the pads and Lumb is happy to help it over the midwicket fence for the first six of the innings.

The last ball is a slower ball which Lumb tries to cut fine but it goes on the bounce to the first slip fielder.

18 runs from that over as Sydney reach 40 for no loss after five overs.

Watson gets a streaky boundary as the outside edge off Bollinger goes wide of the second slip fielder for a boundary. Watson then looks to play across the line but misses and is hit on the pads but once again the LBW appeal is turned down.

The pitch is offering the pacers quite a bit of assistance as Lumb is once again beat outside the off-stump, as he looks to drive a full delivery that moves away considerably.

Lumb is struggling out in the middle as he edges the next delivery to thirdman for a single and Watson is also beaten off the final delivery.

After some plays and misses, Watson finally gets one off the middle as he pulls a short ball from Hilfenhaus over midwicket for a boundary to get off the mark in some style.

He then crashes the next delivery past the mid-off fielder for another boundary before a single to the fine leg region.

Hilfenhaus then drops one short to Lumb, which goes high over the batsman and is called a wide for height. Lumb then plays and misses as he looks to pull a delivery from outside the off-stump but fails to connect.

Hilfenhaus then bowls a beauty, as it bounces a bit extra and moves away from Lumb, to catch the left-hander by surprise.

Watson is struggling to get bat to the ball as he plays and misses again outside the off-stump, before he is hit high on the pads off the next.

Watson then tries to pull the next ball over the leg side but once again he fails to connect and he is hit on the pads off the final ball, but the lbw appeal is turned down.

Australian pacer Ben Hilfenhaus will bowl the first over for Chennai, and up against him will be the two Sydney openers -- Michael Lumb and Shane Watson -- both of whom are renowned to play the big hits.

Left-hander Lumb is beaten off the first ball as it moves away a bit and he defends the second ball to covers. He flicks the third ball behind square on the leg side to get off the mark with a couple.

Lumb then takes a single from the fifth ball to the thirdman region before Shane Watson is beaten off the final ball with another outswinger.
